Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli tutkia yhtäläisyyksiä ja eroja instituutionaalisissa ympäristöissä koti- ja vientimaan välillä, sekä miten päämies-agentti suhde toimii ja kuinka sitä voidaan käyttää koti- ja vientimaan välisen institutionaalisen etäisyyden lieventämiseen. Tutkimuksessa case -yritys toimii agenttiteorian päämiehenä, joka käyttää ulkoisia vientimaassa toimivia myyntiedustajia agenttina. Tämä tutkimus on tehty käyttäen laadullisia menetelmiä. Tiedot kerättiin puolistrukturoidulla haastattelulla, johon haastateltavat valittiin tarkoituksenmukaisesti yhdessä case-yrityksen edustajan kanssa. Tutkimuksella haettiin käytännön vastauksia myyntiedustajien käytöstä keinona vähentää institutionaalista etäisyyttä. Teoria koostuu institutionaalisesta etäisyydestä, jolla tarkoitetaan yhtäläisyyksiä ja eroja koti- ja vientimaan erilaisten instituutioiden välillä, sekä agenttiteoriasta, jossa toinen osapuoli (päämies) palkkaa toisen osapuolen (agentti) suorittamaan tehtävän heidän puolestaan. Teorian lisäksi tehtiin maakohtaiset institutionaaliset profiilit. Companies exporting their products face different institutional environments, in the country of export, from their own. Laws, norms, beliefs, and practices related to professional, political, economic, and social settings differ between countries. To mitigate the institutional distance between the country of origin and the country of export, exporting companies can contract a local sales agent. The objective of this thesis was to study similarities and dissimilarities in the institutional environments between the home country and the country of export. And how the agency relationship, a case company as a principal using external sales agents as the agent, works, and if the agency relationship can mitigate the institutional distance between the home country and country of export. This research is qualitative research and basic business research with characteristics of applied business research as it is conducted as a case study seeking practical answers on utilizing sales agents as a way to mitigate the institutional distance. Data was collected with semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was used to select interviewees from the case company. The main theoretical background consists of the theory on institutional distance, the similarities and dissimilarities in regulatory, cognitive, and normative institutions between two countries; and principal-agent relationship, where one party (principal) contracts another party (agent) to perform a task on their behalf. Additionally, country-specific institutional profiles were made.
