Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin nuoren aikuisuuden elämäntilannetta sekä kognitiivisen kykytason yhteyttä elämäntilanteeseen nuorilla henkilöillä, joilla on autismikirjonhäiriö (ÄO >70) (n=31) ja heidän neurotyypillisillä verrokeillaan (n=34). Tarkastelun kohteena olivat itsenäinen asuminen, parisuhde, jatkokoulutus, työelämässä oleminen sekä sosiaaliset suhteet nuoressa aikuisuudessa, joita selvitettiin Elämäntilanne-kyselyllä. Kognitiivista kykytasoa arvioitiin WAIS-IV kykytestillä, josta käytettiin kielellisen ymmärtämisen (Verbal Comprehension Index, VCI) sekä visuaalisen päättelyn (Perceptual Reasoning Index, PRI) indeksejä. Ristiintaulukointi osoitti, että ASD-henkilöt poikkesivat tilastollisesti merkitsevästi verrokeistaan kaikissa muissa elämäntilanne-luokissa paitsi jatkokouluttautumisessa. Logistisen regression tulosten mukaan ASD-diagnoosi ennusti heikompaa tulosta kaikissa elämäntilanne-luokissa. Korkeammat pisteet kielellisen ymmärtämisen indeksissä olivat yhteydessä itsenäiseen asumiseen ja jatkokoulutukseen diagnoosista riippumatta. Sen sijaan yhdysvaikutusta ei havaittu eli diagnoosi ja kognitiivinen kykytaso eivät yhdessä ennustaneet mitään elämäntilanne-luokkaa. Tämän tutkielman tulokset osoittivat, että vaikka ASD-henkilön kykytaso olisi hyvä, ASD-diagnoosi voi vaikuttaa useisiin elämäntilanteisiin ja aikuisuuden kehitystehtävien saavuttamiseen. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa selvisi, että elämäntilanteet eivät ole yhteydessä ASD-henkilöiden kykytasoon verrokeista poikkeavasti. Tulokset osoittivat, että selvitäkseen arjessa mahdollisimman itsenäisesti, ASD-diagnoosin saaneet nuoret aikuiset tarvitsevat tukea kognitiivisesta tasosta riippumatta nuoruuden kehitystehtävien saavuttamiseksi. However, according to recent research, ASD individuals do not show a typical IQ profile. The current study investigated the transition to adulthood for ASD individuals and controls without cognitive disability (IQ >70). The study focused on the life situations in young adults without intellectual disability, and the relationship to cognitive abilities in ASD (n=31) and control (n=34) populations. Developmental tasks relevant to the transition to young adulthood were assessed through five life situation categories: independent living, romantic relationships, further education, employment and social relationships. Cognitive abilities were measured using WAIS-IV (verbal comprehension index, VCI, and perceptual reasoning index, PRI). Results from cross-tabulation analysis showed that ASD individuals differed significantly from controls in all five life situation categories, except for further education. Logistic regression analysis showed that ASD diagnosis predicted weaker success in the accomplishment of any measured developmental task in young adulthood. Higher scores in VCI were connected to independent living and further education regardless of ASD diagnosis. However, when VCI was combined with PRI and ASD diagnosis, no statistically significant interactions between VCI or PRI and diagnosis emerged. The results showed that ASD diagnosis alone can affect the accomplishment of developmental tasks in young adulthood, regardless of cognitive abilities. Life situations were affected similarly by cognitive abilities in ASD and control groups. Young adults with ASD need support irrespective of intellectual functioning, in order to accomplish the developmental tasks of young adulthood.
