This study sought new information on the backgrounds of adolescents\u2019 physical activity. The aim was to find out whether the adolescents\u2019 subjective social status is related to physical activity. The data were collected as part of the follow-up research and evaluation of the Finnish Schools on the Move programme in 2012\u20132015. \r\nThe data were collected through student surveys, measuring adolescents\u2019 physical activity with accelerometers, and observing and interviewing secondary school students. The associations between adolescents\u2019 subjective social status and physical activity, as well as the factors related to subjective social status, were studied using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Adolescents\u2019 subjective social status was associated with physical activity. Subjective social status in school was positively associated with whole-day moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity. \r\nAdolescents\u2019 high perceived social status in school was significantly associated with physical activity among boys and girls during recess, participation in planning recess activities among girls, and participation in arranging common school events among boys and girls. Subjective social status in school was negatively associated with sedentary time in school. High subjective social status in school was also associated with more activity opportunities created with schoolmates. High subjective social status was also associated with wider environment for physical activities in school which were related to the interactive relationships between adolescents. There were school premises that not everyone had access to, and one limiting factor may be the low subjective social status in school. \r\nStrong social support from teachers, classmates and parents was positively associated with adolescents\u2019 subjective social status at school. Support from parents was associated with physical activity. Support from classmates was associated with physical activity through the subjective social status at school. \r\nThe different subjective experiences of school-based social networks are linked to adolescents\u2019 physical activity and should be taken into account when considering the possibilities of increasing adolescents\u2019 physical activity. Although the foundation of an active lifestyle is largely built on one\u2019s own family, the school still has the potential to compensate for differences in family background with its own actions. Tutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin osana valtakunnallisen Liikkuva koulu -ohjelman seurantaa vuosina 2012\u20132015. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin oppilaskyselyill\u00e4, mittaamalla nuorten fyysist\u00e4 aktiivisuutta liikemittareilla sek\u00e4 havainnoimalla ja haastattelemalla yl\u00e4koululaisia. Nuorten subjektiivisen sosiaalisen aseman ja liikkumisen v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4 sek\u00e4 subjektiiviseen sosiaaliseen asemaan yhteydess\u00e4 olevia tekij\u00f6it\u00e4 selvitettiin sek\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisill\u00e4 ett\u00e4 laadullisilla menetelmill\u00e4. Tutkimuksen kokonaisuus muodostui siten monimenetelm\u00e4lliseksi ja monin\u00e4k\u00f6kulmaiseksi. Nuorten subjektiivinen sosiaalinen asema ja liikkuminen olivat tulosten perusteella yhteydess\u00e4 toisiinsa. Subjektiivisen sosiaalisen asemansa koulussa korkeaksi kokevat nuoret liikkuivat enemm\u00e4n ja reippaammin vapaa-ajallaan verrattuna nuoriin, joiden kokemus omasta sosiaalisesta asemastaan oli matala. Korkea sosiaalinen asema oli sek\u00e4 tyt\u00f6ill\u00e4 ett\u00e4 pojilla yhteydess\u00e4 aktiiviseen liikkumiseen v\u00e4litunneilla sek\u00e4 osallistumiseen koulun yhteisten tapahtumien kuten teemap\u00e4ivien ja juhlien j\u00e4rjest\u00e4miseen. Lis\u00e4ksi tyt\u00f6ill\u00e4 korkea sosiaalinen asema oli yhteydess\u00e4 osallistumiseen v\u00e4lituntitoiminnan suunnitteluun. Sosiaalisen asemansa matalaksi kokevat nuoret olivat koulup\u00e4iv\u00e4n aikana enemm\u00e4n paikallaan, eli heille kertyi liikkumatonta aikaa koulussa enemm\u00e4n kuin sosiaalisen asemansa korkeaksi mielt\u00e4ville nuorille. Korkeaksi koettuun sosiaaliseen asemaan koulussa yhdistyi my\u00f6s enemm\u00e4n kavereiden kanssa luotuja toimintamahdollisuuksia. Samoista koulutiloista muodostui nuorille hyvin erilaisia liikkumisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6j\u00e4. Koulussa oli tiloja, joihin kaikilla ei ollut p\u00e4\u00e4sy\u00e4, ja yhten\u00e4 rajoittavana tekij\u00e4n\u00e4 voi olla matalaksi koettu sosiaalinen asema. Mit\u00e4 vahvempaa sosiaalista tukea nuoret kokivat saavansa sek\u00e4 opettajiltaan, luokkakavereiltaan ett\u00e4 vanhemmiltaan, sit\u00e4 korkeammaksi he kokivat oman sosiaalisen asemansa koulussa. Vanhemmilta saatu sosiaalinen tuki oli suoraan yhteydess\u00e4 nuorten liikkumiseen. Luokkakavereiden tuki oli yhteydess\u00e4 nuorten liikkumiseen kouluyhteis\u00f6ss\u00e4 koetun subjektiivisen sosiaalisen aseman v\u00e4lityksell\u00e4. Kouluun liittyviss\u00e4 sosiaalisissa verkostoissa muodostuvat erilaiset subjektiiviset kokemukset ovat yhteydess\u00e4 nuorten liikkumiseen, ja ne tulisi huomioida jatkossa nykyist\u00e4 paremmin pohdittaessa nuorten liikkumisen lis\u00e4\u00e4misen mahdollisuuksia. Koululla on mahdollisuuksia tasoittaa perhetaustasta kumpuavia eroja nuorten liikkumisessa omilla toimenpiteill\u00e4\u00e4n.
