However, by the 2010s the most notable popularity of marathons had faded away. At the same time, the Finns have been lured into the world of Obstacle Course Racing (OCR). The popularity of this modern and carnivalesque alternative to the traditional running events first exploded in the United States, eventually reaching the crazy Finns as well.\n\nThe purpose of the study is to determine the participant profile of the ExtremeRun obstacle course event. In addition, the purpose is to examine the factors that motivate the participants to participate in the event. The study was carried out as a quantitative survey in collaboration with ExtremeRun Oy. The study sample consisted of adults who participated in ExtremeRun during 2019. The research material (n = 603) was collected with an electronic questionnaire, the design of which utilized previous participant surveys of sports events.\n\nThe research results provided a comprehensive picture of ExtremeRun\u2019s participant profile and motivations for participation. The participant profile is not unambiguous, but the results revealed some background variables that the majority of the participants had in common. ExtremeRun particularly appeals to women, as 77 percent of the participants were women. A typical participant in the event was a woman aged 30-40 with a vocational education or a bachelor's degree, who actively exercises in her free time. The ExtremeRun event was attended especially for reasons related to the event experience. The event was a fun pastime that combined physical activity with close people. Mean differences for all participation motive variables were small, both across the sample and when compared by gender and age group.\n\nBased on this study, ExtremeRun cannot be fully equated with the most well-known OCR event formats. Over the years, ExtremeRun's event brand has changed from a challenging obstacle course event to more playful and fun-filled running event. Nevertheless, the results of this study are valuable for the social sciences of sport, as no one else has yet studied the phenomenon of OCR events in Finland. The study also provides both ExtremeRun and other running event organizers with valuable information about what makes people attend this kind of events. However, more research focusing on OCR events is needed to provide a more comprehensive picture of the phenomenon.", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Submitted by Paivi Vuorio (paelvuor@jyu.fi) on 2021-01-13T07:02:55Z\nNo. of bitstreams: 0", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "provenance", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-13T07:02:55Z (GMT).
