Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin saksan, ruotsin ja englannin kielten merkityksi\u00e4 yksil\u00f6iden identiteetille sek\u00e4 sosiaalisen kontekstin ja kielen yhteiskunnallisen aseman merkityst\u00e4 heid\u00e4n identiteettiprosesseissaan. Kielen ja identiteetin yhteytt\u00e4 on tutkittu paljon, mutta tutkimus on keskittynyt paljon maahanmuuttajien ja kaksikielisten henkil\u00f6iden kielelliseen identiteettiin, kun taas vieraiden kielten n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta aihetta on tutkittu v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n. Viel\u00e4 v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n on tutkittu useamman vieraan kielen merkityst\u00e4 yksil\u00f6n identiteetille. \nTutkimukseen osallistui eri alojen opiskelijoita, jotka opiskelivat saksaa yliopiston kielikeskuksella tai p\u00e4\u00e4-/sivuaineena. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin haastattelun avulla. Haastattelut litteroitiin ja analysoitiin narratiivisen analyysin ja laadullisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla. \nTutkimuksessa selvisi, ett\u00e4 yksil\u00f6t rakensivat kieli-identiteettej\u00e4\u00e4n suhteessa muihin identiteetteihins\u00e4, muihin kieli-identiteetteihins\u00e4 ja suhteessa ymp\u00e4r\u00f6iv\u00e4\u00e4n maailmaan ja yhteiskuntaan. Osallistujilla liittyi erilaisia tunteita ja kokemuksia eri kielten k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n ja opiskeluun, ja he vertasivat eri kieliin liittyvi\u00e4 kokemuksiaan ja kielitaitoaan kesken\u00e4\u00e4n. Osa osallistujista koki saksan l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 mukavana harrastuksena, kun taas englanti liittyi vahvasti luonnollisena osana el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n ja esim. ammatti-identiteettiin. Toiset taas rakensivat saksan kielen avulla muista erottuvaa henkil\u00f6kohtaista identiteetti\u00e4 ja englanti koettiin henkil\u00f6kohtaisesti v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4. Suhteessa ruotsiin identiteettiprosessi n\u00e4kyi erityisesti koului\u00e4ss\u00e4 samaistumisena ymp\u00e4r\u00f6iv\u00e4\u00e4n negatiiviseen ilmapiiriin ja asenteisiin. My\u00f6hemmin osa osallistujista kuitenkin m\u00e4\u00e4ritti suhteensa kieleen uudelleen ja rakensi identiteetti\u00e4\u00e4n riippumatta muiden ihmisten tai omista aikaisemmista k\u00e4sityksist\u00e4\u00e4n. \nTutkimuksessa k\u00e4vi my\u00f6s ilmi, ett\u00e4 sek\u00e4 yksil\u00f6iden autenttiset kokemukset kielest\u00e4 ett\u00e4 kokemukset formaalista oppimisesta luokkahuoneessa olivat mukana kielellisen identiteetin rakentumisprosessissa.
