Monialaisten oppimiskokonaisuuksien tarkoituksena on olla keino toteuttaa eheytt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 opetusta, jonka opetussuunnitelmassa kuvataan olevan osa perusopetuksen yhten\u00e4isyytt\u00e4 tukevaa toimintakulttuuria. K\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 tarkoituksena on toteuttaa teemapohjaista opetusta tai ns. ilmi\u00f6opetusta, joka yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 usean oppiaineen sis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4, tavoitteenaan opettaa oppiainekohtaisten sis\u00e4lt\u00f6jen lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s laaja-alaisia opetussuunnitelmaan merkittyj\u00e4 tavoitteita, kuten monilukutaitoa ja ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6skentelyn taitoja. Monialaisten oppimiskokonaisuuksien keskeisin tavoite on auttaa oppilaita yhdist\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n eri tiedonalojen tietoja ja taitoja hahmottaakseen mielekk\u00e4it\u00e4 kokonaisuuksia, jotka kuvastavat todellisessa maailmassa ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4 ilmenevi\u00e4 ilmi\u00f6it\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi niiden tarkoituksena on auttaa oppilaita vastaamaan todellista maailmaa ja heid\u00e4n arkiel\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 koskeviin kysymyksiin. Tutkimusten mukaan eheytt\u00e4v\u00e4 opetus lis\u00e4\u00e4 motivaatiota oppimista kohtaan sek\u00e4 oppimisen mielekkyytt\u00e4, mutta itse monialaisia oppimiskokonaisuuksia ei ole viel\u00e4 uutuudessaan kunnolla tutkittu. \n\nAlakouluissa on Suomessa toteutettu integroivaa opetusta pitk\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s ennen edell\u00e4 kuvattua uudistusta, mutta englannin kielen oppiaine on harvoin osana integroivaa opetusta. Etenkin monet alakoulun englannin aineenopettajat ovat tottuneet suunnittelemaan opetustaan ja opettamaan yksin, sill\u00e4 aineenopettajan koulutus ei ole perehdytt\u00e4nyt heit\u00e4 integroivaan opetukseen samalla tavoin kuin luokanopettajia. Koska monet englannin opettajat olivat monialaisten oppimiskokonaisuuksien saapuessa uuden edess\u00e4, t\u00e4m\u00e4n ProGradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli teemahaastatteluiden avulla kartoittaa alakoulun englannin opettajien n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 ja kokemuksia englannin oppiaineen integroimisesta monialaisiin oppimiskokonaisuuksiin kolmen ensimm\u00e4isen lukuvuoden ajalta niiden voimaantulosta (2016-2019). Tutkielmaa varten haastateltiin nelj\u00e4\u00e4 englannin oppiainetta monialaisiin oppimiskokonaisuuksiin integroinutta alakoulun englannin opettajaa alkuvuodesta 2019. \n\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 alakoulun englannin opettajat kokivat monialaisten oppimiskokonaisuuksien mahdollistavan englannin opettamisen tavalla, joka poikkeaa perinteisest\u00e4 ja tavanomaisesta, oppikirjaan nojaavasta englannin opetuksesta. Teemapohjainen opetus mahdollistaa englannin oppiaineessa opittujen taitojen soveltamisen monialaisen teeman k\u00e4sittelyyn, sek\u00e4 rohkaisee vapaampaan kielelliseen ilmaisuun englanniksi. Tulokset jaettiin kolmeen kategoriaan, joiden mukaan englannin oppiaineen integrointi monialaisiin oppimiskokonaisuuksiin oli joko oppisis\u00e4ll\u00f6llist\u00e4, esitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 tai kokemuksellista. Haastavaksi koettiin mm. englannin oppiaineen integrointi opetustilanteisiin, joissa opetusryhm\u00e4t olivat kooltaan suuria.
