description Sirous Namazi on rekonstruoinut iranilaisen lapsuudenkotinsa objektit omasta ja perheenjäsentensä muistista käsin installaatiossaan 12.30. Namazi kertoo tutkivansa installaatiossaan muistin mekanismia. Hänen teoksensa toimivat katalysaattoreina filosofisille kysymyksille muistista, ja sen häiritsijöistä traumasta ja nostalgiasta. Maisterintutkielmassani teen käsiteanalyysin installaatiosta 12.30. Olen rakentanut kolme taidehistoriallisesti keskeistä kontekstia installaation ymmärtämisen pohjaksi, joiden teemat ovat trauman ja muistin kysymys taiteessa, migraatioestetiikka ja minimalismin muotokieli muistamisessa. Olen seurannut Mieke Balin ajatuksia käsitteistä analyysin metodina. Käsitteet ovat kaksoisroolissa tutkielmassani, ne toimivat sekä metodina että teoriana. Käsitteet tuovat mukanaan teoreettista puhetta ja ylittävät tieteidenvälisiä rajoja. Käsitteet nostavat esille jotakin representaation ominaispiirteistä ja toimivat alustana keskustelulle. Tutkielmani keskeisiä käsitteitä ovat detalji, affektiivinen politiikka, indeksinen merkki, muistijälki, nostalgia, trauma ja traumaattinen affekti. Tavoitteenani on myös avata trauma ja muistin ilmentymistä nykytaiteen representaatioissa. Pohdin mitä nämä representaation moodit merkitsevät kulttuurisesti. Maisterin tutkielmani on kokeilu käsitteiden käyttökelpoisuudesta visuaalisen aineiston analyysissä. Sirous Namazi has reconstructed his Iranian childhood home objects from his and his family’s memory. Namazi states that he investigates the mechanism of memory in his installation 12.30. The installation works as a catalyst for broader philosophical thinking of memory and its raptures nostalgia and trauma. In my thesis I conduct an analysis of the installation 12.30. I have developed three major art historical contexts for the artworks to cover the analysis. Themes of contexts are as follows: the subject matter of trauma and memory in contemporary art, migration aesthetics, and minimalism in shaping memory in arts. Following Mieke Bal, I use concepts as the basis for analysis. In other words, I use concepts to pin out the essence of the artwork 12.30. Therefore, concepts are used to serve the enquiry of both the theory and the method. Although concepts show certain aspects of the representation they also serve as a platform for discussion drawing from different theoretical views and thinkers. The key concepts in my research are detail, affective politics, indexical sign, memory trace, nostalgia, trauma, and traumatic affect. My aim is also to shed light on the world of trauma and memory in contemporary art representations. A general question that stems from my research is the following: What do these modes of representations reflect in the bigger picture of culture? My master’s thesis in its whole is also an enquire into how concepts are used as tools for a visual analysis of a certain artwork.
