Vaikutukset n\u00e4kyv\u00e4t koko eli\u00f6yhteis\u00f6ss\u00e4. Monet syrj\u00e4ytetyist\u00e4 lajeista ovat uhanalaisia. Aiemmat tutkimukset ovat antaneet viitteit\u00e4 siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 em\u00e4ksinen maaper\u00e4 heikent\u00e4\u00e4 lupiinin kasvua. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, voisiko puutuhkalla nostaa kasvualustan pH:n lupiinille ep\u00e4edullisen korkeaksi, ja voisiko rakeistetulla tuhkalla torjua lupiinia piennaralueilla. The large-leaved lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) is considered invasive in Finland because the species displaces native flora where it grows and is difficult to remove. The effect is seen in the whole community. Many of the displaced species are endangered. Previous studies have suggested that alkaline soil is not suitable for lupine. This study aimed to determine whether wood ash could raise the substrate alkalinity to a level that would prevent lupine growth and whether road verges could be treated with granulated ash in order to remove lupine permanently. The effects of ash on seed germination and seedling growth were examined both in a growth chamber in laboratory conditions and in plant pots outdoors. The alkalinity was adjusted with peat. Along with lupine, three native species were tested as comparators: red fescue (Festuca rubra), white clover (Trifolium repens) and sticky catchfly (Silene viscaria). In laboratory conditions both the ash and the peat affected the lupine adversely. The ash hindered red fescue germination and emergence of the cotyledons of all the studied species. It also lowered the fresh weight of the treated lupine seedlings but didn\u2019t affect their dry weight. The experiments outdoors showed that the granulated ash didn\u2019t raise the soil pH nor did it affect lupine germination or growth. It did, however, fertilize the fescue. The results of the laboratory experiments could not be reproduced outdoors even when using a large amount of ash, suggesting that treating road verges with granulated ash would not prevent lupine growth, but might instead fertilize the lupines.
