Ympa\u0308risto\u0308llisen kesta\u0308vyyden kannalta metsilla\u0308 on erityisen ta\u0308rkea\u0308 rooli hiilinieluina ja monipuolisina elinympa\u0308risto\u0308ina\u0308. Ta\u0308sta\u0308 johtuen metsa\u0308teollisuuden, metsa\u0308nomistajien ja julkisten organisaatioiden toiminnalla on keskeinen vaikutus metsien ja ympa\u0308risto\u0308n kesta\u0308vyyden tukemisessa. Digitalisaatio ja tietoja\u0308rjestelma\u0308t ovat vauhdittaneet ilmastonmuutosta ja luonnon resurssien ylika\u0308ytto\u0308a\u0308. Ta\u0308ta\u0308 kehityskulkua vasten ympa\u0308risto\u0308tietoja\u0308rjestelmien tutkimus pyrkii edista\u0308ma\u0308a\u0308n organisaation prosesseja, ka\u0308yta\u0308nto\u0308ja\u0308 ja toimintaa seka\u0308 niiden kokonaisvaltaista hallintaa, jotta liiketoiminnasta syntyvia\u0308 haitallisia vaikutuksia voitaisiin minimoida ja ympa\u0308risto\u0308llista\u0308 kesta\u0308vyytta\u0308 tukea tietoja\u0308rjestelmien avulla. Koko organisaation kattavien ja\u0308rjestelmien ohella tarvitaan ketteria\u0308, tehokkaita ja joustavia ka\u0308yta\u0308nno\u0308n sovelluksia ympa\u0308risto\u0308tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi. Yhdista\u0308ma\u0308lla\u0308 na\u0308ma\u0308 ulottuvuudet ja tavoitteet, ta\u0308ssa\u0308 tutkielmassa tarkastellaan droonien hyo\u0308dynta\u0308mista\u0308 tietoja\u0308rjestelma\u0308artefakteina seka\u0308 niiden sosiaalisia, teknologisia ja informationaalisia ominaisuuksia ympa\u0308risto\u0308llisen kesta\u0308vyyden tukemiseksi Suomen metsa\u0308teollisuudessa. Viitekehyksena\u0308 sovelletaan tietoja\u0308rjestelma\u0308artefaktin ka\u0308sitetta\u0308, toiminnallisten ka\u0308ytto\u0308mahdollisuuksien la\u0308hestymistapaa, luonnollista resurssiperusteista na\u0308ko\u0308kulmaa, kolmen pilarin malliin perustuvia ympa\u0308risto\u0308tavoitteita seka\u0308 institutionaalista teoriaa. Empiirisena\u0308 perustana hyo\u0308dynneta\u0308a\u0308n laadullista monitapaustutkimusta, jota varten haastateltiin 13 asiantuntijaa metsa\u0308sektorilta, droonipalvelu- ja IT-konsultointiyrityksista\u0308 seka\u0308 ympa\u0308risto\u0308hallinnosta ka\u0308ytta\u0308ma\u0308lla\u0308 puolistrukturoitua haastattelumenetelma\u0308a\u0308. Lo\u0308ydo\u0308kset osoittavat droonien soveltamisen tietoja\u0308rjestelma\u0308artefakteina tukevan ympa\u0308risto\u0308llista\u0308 kesta\u0308vyytta\u0308 metsa\u0308suunnittelun, metsa\u0308tuotannon, metsa\u0308nomistamisen ja ympa\u0308risto\u0308hallinnan prosesseissa ja tehta\u0308vissa\u0308. Drooneja voidaan ka\u0308ytta\u0308a\u0308 ta\u0308sma\u0308llisissa\u0308, kustannustehokkaissa ja reaaliaikaisissa tiedonkeruun ratkaisuissa. Biodiversity loss, acceleration of climate change, increased environmental pollution, melting of polar ice caps and sea level rise are reducing living possibilities widely now and in the future. For environmental sustainability, forests have a particularly important role as diverse carbon sinks and habitats. Therefore, the activities of forest industry, forest owners and public organizations has a central impact in supporting the sustainability of forests and environment. Digitalization and information systems have contributed to acceleration of climate change and overexploitation of natural resources. Against this progression, green information systems research aims for improving organization's processes, practices and activities and their comprehensive management in order to minimize harmful effects caused by business operations and support environmental sustainability with information systems. Along with organization-wide systems, agile, effective and flexible applications in practice are needed to achieve environmental goals. By combining these dimensions and objectives, the utilization of drones as information system artifacts and their social, technological and informational characteristics are observed in this study to support environmental sustainability in Finnish forest industry. As a framework, the concept of information system artifact, approach of functional affordances, natural-resource-based view, eco-goals based on triple bottom line and institutional theory are applied. For the empirical foundation, qualitative multiple-case study is utilized for which 13 experts were interviewed from forest sector, drone services and IT consulting companies and from environmental governance by using semi-structured interview technique. The findings indicate that applying drones as IS artifacts supports environmental sustainability in the processes and activities of forest planning, forest production, forest ownership and environmental governance. Drones can be employed for accurate, cost- efficient and real-time data collection solutions. However, the restrictions concerning technological, legislative, data collection, conditions and availability weaken the applicability of drones.
