T\u00e4st\u00e4 huolimatta ei ole olemassa tutkimuksia siit\u00e4, kuinka kuurot k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6j\u00e4 englannin oppimiseen ja on vain joitakin tutkimuksia siit\u00e4, kuinka kuurot ylip\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n oppivat englantia. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena onkin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, millaisia ovat kuurojen englannin kielen oppimisen prosessit etenkin oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen kannalta. T\u00e4t\u00e4 on selvitetty vertaamalla kuurojen kieltenoppimista kuulevien kieltenoppimiseen.\n\nTutkimus toteutettiin verkkopohjaisella kyselylomakkeella. Osallistujien kriteerin\u00e4 oli, ett\u00e4 he eiv\u00e4t olleet englantia \u00e4idinkielen\u00e4\u00e4n puhuvia, eiv\u00e4tk\u00e4 alle 18- tai yli 40-vuotiaita. Kaiken kaikkiaan aineisto koostui 94 osallistujasta, joista 79 oli kuulevia ja 15 kuuroja. Osallistujille ei annettu tarkkaa m\u00e4\u00e4ritelm\u00e4\u00e4 siit\u00e4, kuka on kuuro, joten he saivat m\u00e4\u00e4ritell\u00e4 itse, kokivatko he olevansa kuuroja vai kuulevia.\n\nKysely koostui useasta kysymyksest\u00e4, joilla kartoitettiin osallistujien arkip\u00e4iv\u00e4n englannin kielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4, sek\u00e4 koulussa ett\u00e4 vapaa-ajalla. Heit\u00e4 pyydettiin my\u00f6s arvioimaan, miten hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4 erilaiset koulussa k\u00e4ytetyt teht\u00e4v\u00e4tyypit ja muut koulun oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6t olivat heille olleet, sek\u00e4 kuvailemaan erilaisia oppimiseen joko negatiivisesti tai positiivisesti vaikuttaneita tekij\u00f6it\u00e4.\n\nTulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 odotusten mukaisesti erilaiset informaalitkin oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6t olivat hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4 englannin oppimisen kannalta. Odotetusti kuulevat my\u00f6s hy\u00f6tyiv\u00e4t kuuroja enemm\u00e4n kuuloon pohjautuvista oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ist\u00e4, kuten musiikista ja kuunteluteht\u00e4vist\u00e4. Kuurojen ei havaittu kompensoivan n\u00e4iden oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen puuttumista toisilla oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ill\u00e4.\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tulokset ovat toivottavasti tulevaisuudessa hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4 etenkin kuuroille englannin kielen oppijoille sek\u00e4 heid\u00e4n opettajilleen.
