Jos populaatiolla ei ole fenotyyppist\u00e4 plastisuutta tai mahdollisuutta siirty\u00e4 uudelle alueelle, sen on kyett\u00e4v\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n jo olemassa olevaa geneettist\u00e4 materiaalia tai tuotettava uusia kelpoisuutta lis\u00e4\u00e4vi\u00e4 mutaatioita. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tarkoitukseni oli testata, miten populaation evolutiivinen tausta ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6nmuutoksen nopeus vaikuttavat populaation kykyyn selviyty\u00e4 muuttuvissa ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6olosuhteissa. Altistin tasaisessa ja vaihtelevassa l\u00e4mp\u00f6tilassa kasvatettuja Serratia marcescens spp. DB11 \u2013klooneja kahdelle eri l\u00e4mp\u00f6k\u00e4sittelylle (hidas ja nopea) tarkastellakseni vaikuttiko aiempi l\u00e4mp\u00f6k\u00e4sittely populaatioiden kykyyn selviyty\u00e4 \u00e4\u00e4ril\u00e4mp\u00f6tilassa. Kumpikin l\u00e4mp\u00f6k\u00e4sittely p\u00e4\u00e4ttyi ennalta m\u00e4\u00e4riteltyihin maksimil\u00e4mp\u00f6tiloihin (39,5 ja 40,0 \u00b0C). Kokeen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 l\u00e4mp\u00f6tilan hidas muutos mahdollistaa populaation paremman kasvun \u00e4\u00e4ril\u00e4mp\u00f6tilassa ja lis\u00e4\u00e4 selviytymisen mahdollisuutta. If a population does not have suitable phenotypic plasticity or lacks the ability to migrate, genetic adaptation is the sole way to avert extinction. Evolutionary rescue (ER) is a phenomenon, in which a population that has experienced a population decline due to changed environmental conditions, is able to recover through standing genetic variation or mutation. I tested how the evolutionary background and the speed of environmental change affect populations\u2019 ability to recover through ER by exposing clonal populations of Serratia marcescens spp. DB11 to two different rates of steady temperature increase. Prior to this experiment the clones were subjected to three different thermal treatments resulting in different evolutionary backgrounds. The thermal treatments were stopped once both treatments reached the pre-defined maximum temperatures of 39.5 and 40.0 \u00b0C. The results indicate that a slower environmental change allows populations to grow and recover more efficiently when exposed to environmental extremes resulting in a higher likelihood for ER. Moreover, the evolutionary background has no significant effect on growth or the likelihood of ER, which emphasises the importance that the speed of environmental change has on adaptation.
