On arvioitu, ett\u00e4 sosiaalista mediaa k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 nykyisin 3,8 miljardia ihmist\u00e4 eli l\u00e4hes puolet koko maapallon v\u00e4kiluvusta. Eniten suosiotaan kasvattanut yksitt\u00e4inen sosiaalisen median palvelu viime vuosina on ollut etenkin nuorten aikuisten suosima kuvapalvelu Instagram. Suuri osa urheiluunkin liittyv\u00e4st\u00e4 viestinn\u00e4st\u00e4 ja markkinoinnista tapahtuu nykyisin sosiaalisen median sovelluksissa. Suosittuja seuraamisen kohteita sosiaalisessa mediassa ovat my\u00f6s yksitt\u00e4iset urheilijat, jotka ovat sosiaalisen median kasvun my\u00f6t\u00e4 entist\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n itse vastuussa omasta julkisuuskuvastaan ja imagostaan. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 pro gradu -tutkielmassa selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n urheilijoiden suhtautumista sosiaaliseen mediaan, etenkin Instagram-kuvapalveluun.\n\nTutkielmassa on mukana kahdeksan suomalaista A-maajoukkuejalkapalloilijaa \u2013 nelj\u00e4 aktiivista Instagram-k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4 naisten maajoukkueesta ja nelj\u00e4 miesten maajoukkueesta. Pelaajien Instagram-julkaisut on analysoitu laadullisen kuva-analyysin keinoin vuoden mittaiselta ajanjaksolta. Lis\u00e4ksi pelaajia on haastateltu teemahaastatteluin. N\u00e4in ollen tutkielman aineistoksi muodostui 619 Instagram-julkaisua sek\u00e4 37 sivua litteroitua haastattelumateriaalia. Tutkielman tavoitteena on esitt\u00e4\u00e4, millaista sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 suomalaiset maajoukkuejalkapalloilijat Instagramissa julkaisevat sek\u00e4 millaiset motiivit heid\u00e4n julkaisemistaan ohjaavat. Motivaatiok\u00e4sitteet sek\u00e4 aiempi tutkimus sosiaalisen median k\u00e4yt\u00f6n motiiveista toimivat tutkielman teoreettisena viitekehyksen\u00e4. \n\nKuva-analyysin tuloksena pelaajien Instagram-julkaisut teemoiteltiin kuuteen kategoriaan. Eniten maajoukkuejalkapalloilijat julkaisevat omaan ammattiinsa liittyvi\u00e4 kuvia jalkapallo-otteluista ja -harjoituksista. Toinen erityisen suosittu teema oli vapaa-aikaan ja yst\u00e4viin liittyv\u00e4t rennommat kuvat. Kaikki pelaajat olivat julkaisseet Instagramissa kuvia my\u00f6s ammattiinsa liittyvist\u00e4, mutta pelikent\u00e4n ulkopuolisista tilanteista, kuten mediatilaisuuksista tai pukukopista. Kolme muuta teemaa olivat yhteiskunnalliset kannanotot, yhteisty\u00f6kumppanuudet sek\u00e4 yksityisel\u00e4m\u00e4.\n\nInstagram-julkaisemisessa sis\u00e4iset motivaatiotekij\u00e4t olivat maajoukkuejalkapalloilijoille merkityksellisi\u00e4. Pelaajat kokivat, ett\u00e4 Instagram on hyv\u00e4 keino tarjota tietoa, tunteita ja kuulumisia jalkapallon seuraajille. Pelaajille oli t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 julkaista Instagramissa omaan persoonaan sopivaa, monipuolista ja autenttista sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4. Oleellisiksi sis\u00e4isiksi motivaatiotekij\u00f6iksi nousivat muun muassa vastavuoroisuus, viihde, luovuus, arkistointi ja yhteis\u00f6llisyys. Maajoukkuejalkapalloilijat eiv\u00e4t kokeneet ulkoisia motivaatiotekij\u00f6it\u00e4, kuten julkisuuskuvan kasvattamista, uusien yhteisty\u00f6kumppanuuksien l\u00f6yt\u00e4mist\u00e4 tai henkil\u00f6br\u00e4ndin rakentamista t\u00e4rkeiksi motiiveiksi julkaistessaan Instagramissa. It is estimated that globally the number of social media users is 3,8 billion, which equals to nearly 50 percent of the world population. In recent years, photo and video sharing application Instagram has been the most emerging social media platform. Nowadays, also a remarkable portion of sports-related marketing and communication takes place on Instagram and other social media platforms. Consequently, athletes and other celebrities are highly popular individuals in social media. Social media has encouraged athletes to take more responsibility for their own public image. In this study athletes\u2019 attitudes towards social media, especially Instagram, are examined.\n\nEight Finnish national teams football players took part to this study \u2013 four active Instagram-users from women\u2019s national team and four from men\u2019s national team. Players\u2019 Instagram posts from a one-year period were examined utilizing visual content analysis method. Players were also interviewed using theme interview method. As a result, the data consists of 619 Instagram posts and 37 pages of interview material after transcribing. The objective of this study is to introduce what types of contents football players are posting on their Instagram-profiles and what motives are guiding their posting. The theoretical framework in this study consists of the previous studies carried out to investigate social media usage motives.\n\nAs a result of the visual content analysis Instagram posts were thematized into six categories. According to the analysis the most posted theme on Finnish football players\u2019 Instagram-profiles was pictures of football matches and training sessions. Casual pictures of players\u2019 leisure time activities and friendships was also a popular theme. All players had also posted behind the scenes -pictures of professional football players\u2019 work like meeting sports journalists or hanging out in the dressing room. The last three categories were private life, sponsorships and political or social statements.\n\nIntrinsic motivation factors were important what comes to players\u2019 Instagram usage. Players argued that Instagram is an appropriate tool to offer information, emotions and news to football supporters. Players felt it important to post contents, which are suitable for their own personality, authentic and diverse. Other prominent intrinsic motivation factors were for example reciprocity, sense of community, entertainment, creativity and archiving. Finnish football players considered that extrinsic motivation factors, such as increasing publicity, seeking out new sponsors or building personal brand value, have not been important motives for their Instagram usage.
