The rapid development of automatic speech recognition technology also known as ASR enables its use in many healthcare systems and services. This Bachelor's thesis, which is a literature review, addresses the use of speech recognition technology in dictation of medical records. The topic is important because new breakthroughs in speech recognition technology can provide a more cost-effective, high-quality, and safer way to dictate medical records. The thesis explores relevant concepts and technologies such as electronic healthcare systems, medical transcriptions and automatic speech recognition. The research questions are \u201cHow is speech recognition technology utilized in healthcare medical records?\u201d and \u201cWhat benefits can the use of speech recognition technology have in dictating medical records?\u201d The sources for the thesis are from Google Scholar and JYKDOK search services. While researching the sources I focused on finding the highest quality and up-to-date information about the subject. The study found that speech recognition has been used in used healthcare medical records for several decades. However, it is not until the 2010s that its potential has been fully exploited. Instead, the benefits of using voice recognition are cost savings, increased efficiency, and improved patient record integrity.
