Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelimme, kuinka kokeellisesti tuotettu surullinen mieliala vaikuttaa kasvojen ilmeiden havaitsemiseen sekä N170-vasteeseen terveillä koehenkilöillä. Koehenkilöt osallistuivat kahteen erilliseen mittauspäivään, joissa heille aiheutettiin surullinen ja neutraali mieliala. Kasvojen ilmeiden tunnistamistehtävässä koehenkilöille esitettiin neutraaleja ja surullisia kasvoja subliminaalisesti ja supraliminaalisesti. Koehenkilöt oli ohjeistettu vastaamaan, onko esitetty kasvo ilmeeltään surullinen vai neutraali. Tulokset osoittivat, että kasvojen havaitsemisen tarkkuus oli parempi, kun mieliala oli yhdenmukainen kuvien kasvojen ilmeiden (surullinen tai neutraali) kanssa, mutta ainoastaan subliminaalisesti esitettyjen kasvojen osalta. Verrattuna neutraaliin mielialaan, surullisen mielialan aikana neutraalit kasvot arvioitiin useimmin surullisiksi kasvoiksi. Tulokset N170-vasteen osalta supraliminaalisessa tilanteessa osoittivat, että neutraalin mielialan aikana vaste surullisiin kasvoihin oli suurempi kuin neutraaleihin kasvoihin. Subliminaalisessa tilanteessa neutraalit kasvot aiheuttivat suuremman N170-vasteen kuin surulliset kasvot. Tulosten perusteella terveillä koehenkilöillä ilmenee negatiivisesti vääristynyttä subliminaalisten neutraalien kasvojen ilmeiden tulkintaa, kun henkilöt ovat surullisessa mielialassa. Kuitenkin, surullinen mieliala vaikuttaa vain käyttäytymisen tasolla, mutta N170 vaste surullisiin kasvoihin ei eroa vasteesta neutraaleihin kasvoihin. Vaikka tulokset on saatu kokeellisesti tuotetussa tilanteessa, ne saattavat yleistyä tosielämän tilanteisiin. In addition, face-sensitive event-related potential N170 is typically enhanced for sad faces in depressed individuals compared to healthy controls. In the current study we explored how induced sad mood affects the detection of facial expressions and N170 in healthy participants. Participants attended two different measurement days where they were induced sad or neutral mood. In a facial recognition task neutral and sad faces were presented subliminally and supraliminally to the participants who were instructed to decide whether the face they saw was neutral or sad. The results indicated that the accuracy was better when mood was congruent with facial expression (sad and neutral), but only in subliminal condition. Neutral faces were also more often misjudged as sad when in sad mood compared to neutral mood. Results for the N170 indicated, that in supraliminal trials, the amplitude was enhanced for sad faces during neutral mood, compared to neutral faces. Nonetheless, N170 was larger for subliminal neutral faces compared to sad faces. The results suggest that healthy participants show negatively biased judgment of subliminal neutral facial expressions when in sad mood. However, sad mood affects behavioral level but it doesn’t enhance N170 for sad faces compared to neutral faces. Although the results have been obtained in an experimental situation, they may be generalized in real life situtations.
