Opettamisen naisvaltaisuus on l\u00e4nsimaissa tunnistettu ja tutkittu ilmi\u00f6, mutta usein aiheen keskusteluilmapiiri\u00e4 leimaa huolestunut suhtautuminen feminisaatioon niin oppilaiden, kuin opetuksenkin kannalta. Suomessa tehdyss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa on selv\u00e4 aukko, ja my\u00f6s kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 tutkimusta juuri opiskelijoiden ja opettajien n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta on v\u00e4h\u00e4isesti. \n \nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4osin laadullisessa tutkimuksessa pyrittiin selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, mit\u00e4 mielt\u00e4 englannin opettajat (n=89) ja opiskelijat (n=50) ovat englannin opettamisen naisvaltaisuudesta. Heit\u00e4 pyydettiin my\u00f6s antamaan syit\u00e4 sille, miksi Suomessa englannin opettajina naisia on merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti miehi\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n ja lis\u00e4ksi selvitettiin, mik\u00e4 merkitys englannin opettajan sukupuolella on osallistujien mielest\u00e4. Aineiston keruussa k\u00e4ytettiin Webropol-kysely\u00e4, joka l\u00e4hetettiin Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston englannin opettajaopiskelijoille, sek\u00e4 englannin opettajille ymp\u00e4ri Suomea. Kysely koostui sek\u00e4 suljetuista, ett\u00e4 avoimista kysymyksist\u00e4. Kyselyn lis\u00e4ksi tutkimus koostuu kahden yliopisto-opiskelijan ja kolmen opettajan yksil\u00f6haastatteluista, jokainen heist\u00e4 oli my\u00f6s vastannut kyselyyn. Aineisto analysoitiin p\u00e4\u00e4osin laadullisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla, mutta kyselyst\u00e4 saatua dataa muutettiin my\u00f6s m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4lliseen muotoon. \n \nTulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 opettamisen naisvaltaisuus n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n edelleen ongelmallisena, tilanteena, joka olisi hyv\u00e4 muuttaa niin, ett\u00e4 miehi\u00e4 ja naisia olisi sama m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 opettajina. Silti sek\u00e4 opiskelijoille ett\u00e4 opettajille sukupuolijaon tasoittamisessa tuntui olevan kyse ennen kaikkea monimuotoisuuden lis\u00e4\u00e4misest\u00e4 kouluihin. Annetut syyt miesten v\u00e4hyyteen alalla vaihtelivat, mutta eniten uskottiin kiinnostuksen kohteiden, opettamisen arvostuksen v\u00e4hyyden, palkan ja yleisten odotusten vaikuttavan feminisaatioon. Tutkimuksesta k\u00e4vi ilmi, ett\u00e4 sek\u00e4 miehet ja naiset ett\u00e4 opettajat ja opiskelijat pitiv\u00e4t eri syit\u00e4 t\u00e4rkein\u00e4. Kyselyn perusteella osallistujat eiv\u00e4t pit\u00e4neet juuri englannin opettajan sukupuolta merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4, mutta yleisemmin opettajan ammatissa etenkin miehet uskoivat opettajan sukupuolen olevan t\u00e4rke\u00e4. Etenkin haastatteluissa korostui, ett\u00e4 naisopettajat pelk\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t syrjint\u00e4\u00e4 ty\u00f6nhaussa miesten v\u00e4hyyden vuoksi. Kuitenkaan englannin kielen opettamista itsess\u00e4\u00e4n ei koettu feminiiniseksi ammatiksi. \n \nLis\u00e4tutkimusta aiheesta olisi suotavaa tehd\u00e4 viel\u00e4 laajemmalla osallistujam\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja osallistujilla useammista eri oppiaineista.
