Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on muodostaa selkeä kuva tutkimuksen nykytilanteesta. Tässä tutkielmassa käsitellään edellä mainittujen MANET-verkkojen käyttöä katastrofitilanteissa. Tutkielma on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena katastrofienhallinnan nykytilanteesta, katastrofeista ja langattomista verkoista. Tutkielman rakenne on seuraava: aluksi eritellään langattomien verkkojen ja ad hoc -verkkojen teknologiaa ja toimintamenetelmiä, minkä jälkeen käsitellään luonnonkatastrofit ja antropogeeniset katastrofit, eli ihmisten aiheuttamat katastrofit, sekä määritellään katastrofienhallinta. Neljännessä kappaleessa eritellään mobiilien ad hoc -verkkojen hyötyjä ja haasteita katastrofienhallinnan kontekstissa sekä eritellään joitain ehdotettuja implementaatiomahdollisuuksia. Viimeisessä kappaleessa käydään kokonaisuus läpi, reflektoidaan tutkielman onnistumista ja esitetään mahdollisia jatkotutkimuskohteita. Tutkielmassa havaittiin, että selkeää yleisesti hyväksyttyä käytännettä mobiileille ad hoc -verkoille katastrofinhallinnassa ei ole, mutta ongelmaa on kuitenkin pyritty ratkaisemaan monen eri toimijan toimesta. Suuri osa aiheeseen liittyvästä tutkimuksesta on toteutettu Kaakkois-Aasiassa, jossa katastrofien määrä on suurin. Alueella sijaitsevien kehittyvien maiden määrän vuoksi ehdotetut ratkaisut usein korostavat ad hoc -verkkojen helppoa implementaatiota nykyiseen infrastruktuuriin. Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are independently functioning wireless networks that enable communication without traditional networks. The usage of MANETs in disaster management has been researched since the early 2000s but an implementation that is in general use has not been made yet. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a clear picture of the current state of research. This paper deals with the use of the above-mentioned MANET networks in the event of disasters. The thesis has been carried out as a literature review of the current state of disaster management, disasters, and wireless networks. The thesis is structured as follows: first, the technologies and methods of operation of wireless and ad hoc networks are identified, followed by natural and anthropogenic disasters, alias man-made catastrophes, and the definition of disaster management. The fourth chapter analyzes the benefits and challenges of mobile ad hoc networks in the context of disaster management and identifies some of the proposed implementation options. In the last paragraph, the thesis is reviewed, the success of the thesis is reflected and possible areas for further research are presented. The study found that there is no clear generally accepted practice for mobile ad hoc networks in disaster management, but efforts have been made to address the problem by many different actors. Much of the research on this topic has been conducted in Southeast Asia, where the number of disasters is highest. Due to the number of developing countries in the area, the proposed solutions often emphasize the easy implementation of ad hoc networks into existing infrastructure.
