Talvivaaran monimetallikaivoksen bioliuotusprosessista lasketaan vesist\u00f6ihin happamia metalli- ja sulfaattipitoisia j\u00e4tevesi\u00e4. Happamissa oloissa useimmat ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6lle haitalliset metallit ovat liukoisessa biosaatavammassa muodossa, mik\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4 niiden toksisuutta eli\u00f6ille. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa selvitettiin in situ -haudontamenetelm\u00e4n k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kelpoisuutta arvioitaessa metallikaivoksen j\u00e4tevesip\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6jen vaikutuksia taimenen (Salmo trutta L.) ja planktonsiian (Coregonus lavaretus L.) m\u00e4timunien s\u00e4ilyvyyteen, alkioiden kasvuun ja ruskuaisenk\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. In situ -m\u00e4dinhaudontamenetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4 voidaan tutkia pitk\u00e4kestoisen altistuksen kumulatiivista vaikutusta koeyksil\u00f6ihin todellisuutta vastaavassa ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4, mutta haasteena on saada pelkk\u00e4 kaivosvaikutus esiin usean muun vaikuttavan taustamuuttujan joukosta. Tutkimuksessa ei saatu n\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kaivostoiminta lis\u00e4isi alkioiden kuolevuutta kummallakaan lajilla. Siian s\u00e4ilyvyydet vastasivat muissa tutkimuksissa aiemmin havaittua tasoa. Talvivaara polymetal mine discharges acidic metal- and sulphur-rich effluents from bioheap leaching process into the environment. In acidic conditions most environmentally harmful metals are in soluble and more bioavailable form increasing their toxicity to organisms. This study assessed the applicability of an in situ -incubation method to evaluation of the impacts of metal mining on the mortality, growth, and yolk consumption of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) embryos. The in situ -incubation method can be applied to study long-term cumulative impacts to embryos exposed in a real environment, but the challenge is to differentiate a specific mining impact from other factors. In this study the mortality of neither species was impacted by mining activities. The mortality of whitefish embryos was similar to previously published studies and the high mortality of brown trout embryos both in the mine-impacted and reference sites tell more about the unsuitability of the incubation conditions in Talvivaara area for early life-stages of brown trout than about direct mining impacts. Differences in thermal conditions between incubation sites impacted on the dry weight and length development of both brown trout and whitefish embryos. The development was faster, and embryos had higher dry weight and length at incubation sites where the water temperature was higher compared to sites with colder water. Brown trout embryos consumed only a minor proportion of yolk, while whitefish had higher yolk consumption during the incubation experiment. The most sensitive development steps of the early life stages, fertilization and following initial phases and the hatching period, were not included in the study. It is also not known what impacts the exposure to mining effluents during early life stages may cause later in life.
