Opettajien ammatillista kehittymist\u00e4 ei ole tutkittu riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti maailman hauraimmissa olosuhteissa, joissa ammattitaitoisten opettajien tarve on kaikkein suurin. Keskittym\u00e4ll\u00e4 opettajien kokemuksiin, toiveisiin ja motivaatioihin, t\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkielma tuo lis\u00e4arvoa aikaisempaan tutkimukseen opettajien ammatillisesta kehittymisest\u00e4 hauraissa olosuhteissa.\nTutkimus toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena, joka tutki opettajien ammatillisia kehittymismahdollisuuksia sek\u00e4 opettajien aikaisempien kokemusten ett\u00e4 tulevaisuuden toiveiden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Tutkimuksen toisena tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mitk\u00e4 tekij\u00e4t vaikuttavat opettajien motivaatioon kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 itse\u00e4\u00e4n ammatillisesti. Tutkimuksen ensisijainen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin pakolaisleirille suuntautuneen kentt\u00e4vierailun aikana, jolloin leirill\u00e4 ty\u00f6skentelevi\u00e4 opettajia haastateltiin. T\u00e4m\u00e4n lis\u00e4ksi tutkimus k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 aineistonaan kentt\u00e4muistiinpanoja ja kyseisen pakolaisleirin koulutusresursseja koskevia tilastoja. Analyysi toteutettiin laadullisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla.\nTutkimuksen tulokset paljastivat, ett\u00e4 tarjolla olevat ammatilliset kehitysmahdollisuudet eiv\u00e4t vastaa opettajien toivomuksia. Opettajilla on kunnianhimoisia tavoitteita liittyen akateemiseen jatkokouluttautumiseen, mutta tarjolla on pelk\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n yksitt\u00e4isi\u00e4 ja ep\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisi\u00e4 ty\u00f6paja- tai seminaarikertoja, jotka eiv\u00e4t tarjoa mahdollisuuksia muodolliseen p\u00e4tev\u00f6itymiseen. Tutkimuksen toinen tulos osoittaa, ett\u00e4 opettajien sis\u00e4inen motivaatio on kaikista merkitt\u00e4vin tekij\u00e4 opettajien ammatillisen kehittymisen taustalla. N\u00e4iden tulosten lis\u00e4ksi tutkimus toi esille huolestuttavaa tietoa pakolaisleirill\u00e4 asuvien ja ty\u00f6skentelevien opettajien ankarista elinolosuhteista, jotka voivat vaikuttaa opettajien halukkuuteen ty\u00f6skennell\u00e4 leirill\u00e4 pitk\u00e4aikaisesti.\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan ehdottaa, ett\u00e4 opettajille tulisi olla tarjolla enemm\u00e4n tukea ja joustavampia jatkokoulutusmahdollisuuksia. T\u00e4m\u00e4 vahvistaisi opettajien motivaatiota ja parantaisi Ugandan koulutusj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n laatua. The topic of teacher professional development is severely under-researched in the most fragile contexts of the world, where the need for qualified teachers is the greatest. This thesis contributes to the existing research on teacher professional development in fragile contexts by focusing on the experiences, wishes, and motivations of the teachers themselves.\nThe research was implemented as a case study which focused on the past experiences and future wishes of teachers on their professional development opportunities in the refugee settlement. The other aim of the study was to find out what factors affect the motivation of teachers for professional development. The primary data of the research was collected on a field visit to the refugee settlement where teacher interviews were conducted. In addition, the research data consisted of field observation notes and education gap statistics concerning the settlement in question. The data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis.\nThe findings of this study revealed that there is a gap between the current form and availability of teacher professional development opportunities and the wishes of teachers. While the teachers have ambitious plans for academic upgrading, the available professional development comes in the form of infrequent workshop and seminar sessions which do not lead to formal qualification. The other finding of the study indicates that the motivation of teachers for professional development is deeply embedded in their intrinsic motivation and the intrinsic value that they attach to professional development and helping their students. In addition, the research exposed worrying facts about the harsh living and working conditions of teachers in the settlement, which might pose a threat for retaining teachers on long term.\nBased on this research it can be suggested that there should be more support and flexible upgrading opportunities available for the teachers. This would strengthen the motivation of teachers and improve the quality of the overall education system of Uganda.
