Pk-yritysten suunnatessa liiketoimintaansa yh\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n kansainv\u00e4lisille markkinoille, ovat ne osoittaneet potentiaalinsa kansainv\u00e4lisen liiketoiminnan kasvulle. Samalla niiden merkitys valtioiden hyvinvoinnin kannalta voidaan todeta olevan merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4.\n\nKoska aikaisemmat kansainv\u00e4listymiseen liittyv\u00e4t tutkimukset ovat keskittyneet tutkimaan monikansallisia yrityksi\u00e4, t\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tutkitaan suomalaisten pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 suoriutumista. Tutkimuksessa hy\u00f6dynnet\u00e4\u00e4n Amal ja Filhon (2009) pk-yritysten kansainv\u00e4listymismallia. Tutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin haastattelemalla kolmea suomalaista IT-alan yrityst\u00e4, jotka ovat viime aikoina onnistuneet laajentamaan liiketoimintaansa kansainv\u00e4lisille markkinoille. Laadullisen tutkimuksen avulla pyrittiin tutkimaan ja syvent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 siit\u00e4, miten yritt\u00e4j\u00e4resurssit, kansainv\u00e4listen markkinoiden valinta, verkostoituminen, markkinoille tulomalli, sek\u00e4 mahdolliset markkina esteet vaikuttavat pk-yritysten kansainv\u00e4liseen suoriutumiskykyyn. \n\nTutkimuksesta saadut tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 suomalaisten pk-yritysten kansainv\u00e4listyminen ei etene asteittain, eik\u00e4 kohdemaita valita sen mukaan, mitk\u00e4 markkinat ovat fyysisesti tai kulttuurisesti l\u00e4hell\u00e4 kotimarkkinoita. Ensimm\u00e4iset kansainv\u00e4lisen liiketoiminnan kohteet valitaan ennemmin strategisista syist\u00e4. T\u00e4rkeimpin\u00e4 markkinoiden valintaan vaikuttavina tekij\u00f6in\u00e4 tunnistettiin markkinoille p\u00e4\u00e4syn helppous, kohdemarkkinoiden koko sek\u00e4 kasvupotentiaali. Tuloksien perusteella voidaan my\u00f6s todeta, ett\u00e4 yrityksen johdon/yritt\u00e4j\u00e4n rooli on merkitt\u00e4vin tekij\u00e4 pk-yritysten kansainv\u00e4lisen suoriutumisen kannalta. Johdon teht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 on mahdollistaa tarvittavat resurssit, luoda kansainv\u00e4lisi\u00e4 suhteita, sek\u00e4 ennen kaikkea osoittaa oma tahto vied\u00e4 yritys kohti kansainv\u00e4lisi\u00e4 markkinoita. \n\nTulokset osoittavat my\u00f6s sen, ett\u00e4 mik\u00e4li pk-yrityksen tavoitteena on hakea laajempaa yrityskasvua, on kasvun edellytyksen\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4listyminen. As the SMEs have directed their business operations increasingly towards foreign markets, they have showed their potential for the business growth and their role for the nations wellbeing has been noted as significant. \n\nSince the previous internationalization studies have concentrated on researching multinational enterprises, this study concentrates to explore international performance of Finnish SMEs by utilizing the international performance model written by Amal & Filho (2009). Data for the research was gathered by interviewing three Finnish information technology SMEs that have lately managed to broaden their business towards international markets. By conducting a qualitative research, the aim was to explore and deepen understanding how entrepreneurial resources, international market selection, networking, entry models and possible market barriers have an influence on international performance of SMEs. \n\nResults showed that internationalization of Finnish SMEs is not sequential, and the potential markets are not chosen according to which countries are physically or culturally close to domestic markets. First target markets are mostly chosen because of the strategic reasons. Easiness to access, market size and the market growth were identified as key factors when selecting markets. Results also indicated that the role of management/entrepreneur of the company is the most significant determinant for the international performance of SMEs. The role of the management is to provide the needed resources, establish international relations and prove their own willingness to take the organization towards international markets. \n\nIn addition, internationalization can be considered as a prerequisite when the goal for the SME is to increase its business growth.
