Reaktio vaatii tapahtuakseen katalyyttej\u00e4, jotka ovat yleens\u00e4 oksideilla tuettuja siirtym\u00e4metallinanopartikkeleita. Kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 tehokkaampia katalyyttej\u00e4 voidaan s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4 materiaaleja ja energiaa. Uusia katalyyttej\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4ess\u00e4 on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 tuntea, miss\u00e4 kohtaa katalyytti\u00e4 reaktio tapahtuu, mik\u00e4 on reaktiomekanismi ja mik\u00e4 rajoittaa reaktionopeutta. Kupari ja nikkeli ovat edullisia materiaaleja, jotka ovat osoittaneet hyv\u00e4\u00e4 aktiivisuutta vesikaasureaktiossa ja reformoinnissa. Kuparipinnoilla reaktio etenee karboksyyliv\u00e4livaiheen kautta ja reaktionopeutta rajoittava askel on veden hajoaminen. Nikkelipinnoilla reaktiomekanismista ei ole yksimielisyytt\u00e4, vaan sek\u00e4 hiilimonoksidin suora hapetus, ett\u00e4 karboksyyliv\u00e4livaiheen kautta etenev\u00e4 mekanismi ovat mahdollisia.
