Menetelmänä on käytetty kirjallisuuskatsausta. Tutkielman selvitystyössä käytettiin Google Scholar –hakukonetta. Lisäksi apuna toimivat alalla tunnettuja konferenssijulkaisuja sekä teknisiä lähteitä sisältävät tietokannat, kuten International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB), IEEE Explorer ja ACM Digital Library. Materiaalista tunnistettujen avainsanojen suodatuksen ja luokittelun jälkeen oli mahdollista tunnistaa tutkimuksien kiinnostuksen kohteet. NoSQL-tietokantojen tulo markkinoille tutkimusvuosien aikana aiheutti huomattavan kiinnostuksen tutkimuksellisesti. Perinteisemmät relaatiotietokannat pitivät kuitenkin hyvin pintansa tässä otannassa. Suurimman yllätyksen tuloksissa tuotti tietoturvallisuuteen liittyvät aiheet, jotka nousivat esiin epätasaisesti. Keskelle kuumimpia vuosia osui otantaan kahden vuoden jakso, joiden aikana tietoturvallisuuteen liittyviä avainsanoja ei löytynyt ollenkaan. Purpose of this thesis was to discover hot research topics of database technologies during 2008 – 20017. Selected years were years of great changes in the field of database technologies and therefore they provide a possibility to see how these changes affect scientific research. Method used to do this thesis was literature review. Research was performed using Google Scholar search engine. Additional research was performed using known conference publications and technical sources containing databases, such as International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB), IEEE Explorer and ACM Digital Library. Filtered keywords identified from the research material were classified to open possibility to see interest of the scientific research. Entry of NoSQL databases to market was during the years of interest causing tremendous interest in the scientific research. Traditional relational databases were still able to hold their position well in the found research material. Biggest surprise in the results was data security related topics as during the time period of selected years for this thesis, a two-year hiatus of security related keywords was observed.
