Motivaatio itsess\u00e4\u00e4n on melko abstrakti k\u00e4site, ja sen m\u00e4\u00e4rittely onkin ollut tutkijoille haastavaa. Motivaation tutkimuksen peruskysymyksill\u00e4 yritet\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 vastausta siihen, mik\u00e4 saa ihmisen tekem\u00e4\u00e4n tiettyj\u00e4 asioita, ja mik\u00e4 saa h\u00e4net jatkamaan tekemist\u00e4 niiden parissa. Vaikka motivaatiota vieraiden kielten opiskelussa on tutkittu laajalti eri kieliss\u00e4 ja eri kohderyhmill\u00e4, sijaishuollossa olevien lasten kielten opiskelua, saati heid\u00e4n motivaatiotaan kielten opiskeluun, ei ole tutkittu. Sijaishuollossa olevien lasten ja nuorten koulunk\u00e4yntiin ja akateemiseen suoriutumiseen liittyv\u00e4 tutkimus on pitk\u00e4lti keskittynyt erin\u00e4isiin haasteisiin ja ongelmiin, joita he usein kohtaavat kouluaikanaan. Jotta opettajat voisivat kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 opetustaan ja k\u00e4ytett\u00e4vi\u00e4 oppimateriaaleja, tutkimuksessa on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 ottaa huomioon my\u00f6s motivaation n\u00e4k\u00f6kulma. \n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 sijaishuollossa olevien nuorten motivaatioon my\u00f6nteisesti ja kielteisesti vaikuttavia tekij\u00f6it\u00e4 englannin opiskelussa. Tutkimus toteutettiin teemahaastatteluina lastensuojelulaitoksessa It\u00e4-Suomessa elokuussa 2019. Tutkimukseen osallistui 2 laitokseen sijoitettua yl\u00e4kouluk\u00e4ist\u00e4 nuorta. Tutkimushaastattelut rajattiin kahteen teemaan: englannin opiskelu koulussa, sek\u00e4 kontakti englannin kieleen vapaa-ajalla. Aineiston analysoinnissa k\u00e4ytettiin laadullista sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia. \n\nTutkimuksesta ilmenee, ett\u00e4 koulussa erityisesti opettajan opetustyyli tai k\u00e4ytetyt opetuskeinot vaikuttavat nuorten motivaatioon. Vastauksien n\u00e4ytt\u00e4minen koettiin motivaatiota heikent\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 keinona opetuksessa, kun taas kannustaminen ja avun tarjoaminen koettiin motivaatiota lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 nuorten oma kokemusmaailma ja henkil\u00f6kohtaiset mielenkiinnon kohteet vaikuttavat siihen, miten he ovat mieluiten tekemisiss\u00e4 englannin kielen kanssa vapaa-ajallaan. T\u00e4rkeimp\u00e4n\u00e4 tutkimus kuitenkin osoitti, etteiv\u00e4t nuorten antamat vastaukset motivaatiosta merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti eroa aiemmista tutkimuksista.
