Vuonna 2011, ennen Fucus spiralis -lajin alalajina pidetty Fucus\nspiralis var. platycarpus sai lajinimen Fucus guiryi. Laji on my\u00f6s l\u00e4heist\u00e4 sukua lajille\nF. vesiculosus. T\u00e4m\u00e4n lis\u00e4ksi tavoitteena oli\nselvitt\u00e4\u00e4 kuinka rannan suojaisuus vaikuttaa lajien kokoon ja runsauteen.\nSuojaisuuden m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4miseen k\u00e4ytettiin rannan kompassisuuntaa, kaltevuutta ja\nkasvualustaa. Aineiston keruuta varten k\u00e4ytettiin vuorovesivy\u00f6hykkeen yli\nkulkevia laskentalinjoja. Yksil\u00f6ilt\u00e4 mitattiin pituus, ymp\u00e4rysmitta ja varren paksuin\nkohta. Pituuden ja ymp\u00e4rysmitan avulla laskettiin yksil\u00f6n tuuheus. Tulokseksi\nsaatiin, ett\u00e4 koon ja morfologian perusteella lajit on mahdollista erottaa toisistaan\nkyseisell\u00e4 levinneisyysalueella. A brown marine macroalgae Fucus spiralis var.\nplatycarpus was given species status as F. guiryi in 2011. Though it was previously\nthought to have been a subspecies of F. spiralis, it is also similar to F. vesiculosus in\nmorphology. The size and abundance of these three species have not yet been\ncorrelated to their environment and especially F. guiryi is not well known. This\nstudy aimed to shed light on how we can separate F. spiralis, F. guiryi, and F.\nvesiculosus along the west coast of Scotland. The second aim was to compare their\nzonation in the north to the zonation in their more southern range, including\nPortugal. The third aim was to understand the role that shore shelteredness played\nin the size and abundance of these species. Aspect (compass direction), slope, and\nsubstrate were recorded for eighteen shores. Transects were laid out to span the\nintertidal zone inhabited by the species, allowing calculation of percentage cover\nand zonation. Individuals of each species were measured for their length, maximum\ncircumference, and thallus width. The species were so different in size as well as\nmorphology that it was possible to distinguish them. The zonation patterns found\nin the species\u2019 southern range are reflected in their northern distribution apart from\nnot having a zone with all three species.
