Tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin hy\u00f6dyksi pelitutkimuksesta koottuja heuristiikkoja, jotka kategorisoitiin temaattiseen ja toiminnalliseen immersioon sek\u00e4 mekaaniseen, sosiaaliseen ja teknologiseen interaktioon. \n \nTutkimuksessa testattavaksi peliksi valittiin lautapelien klassikko The Settlers of Catan, sill\u00e4 analogisen lautapelin lis\u00e4ksi pelist\u00e4 oli saatavilla my\u00f6s useita digitaalisia versioita. Pelin testattaviksi digitaalisiksi versioiksi valittiin Catan Universe, jota testattiin \u00e4lypuhelimilla, tableteilla ja tietokoneilla, sek\u00e4 Tabletop Simulator -alustasovellukselle toteutettu The Settlers of Catan -peli, jota testattiin tietokoneella sek\u00e4 VR-laitteiston kanssa ett\u00e4 ilman. Tutkimus toteutettiin muodostamalla nelj\u00e4n hengen testiryhm\u00e4, jolle j\u00e4rjestettiin pelitestisessiot valituista peliversioista, ja jota haastateltiin teemahaastattelun avulla. \n \nTutkimustulosten analyysist\u00e4 ja johtop\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksist\u00e4 ilmeni, ett\u00e4 digitaaliset lautapelit ovat sosiaaliselta interaktioltaan analogisia lautapelej\u00e4 suppeampia mutta temaattiselta immersioltaan niit\u00e4 rikkaampia. Automaatio voi nopeuttaa peli\u00e4, mutta se voi my\u00f6s heikent\u00e4\u00e4 toiminnallista immersiota ja mekaanista interaktiota. Pelilaitteen n\u00e4yt\u00f6n osuus pelaajan n\u00e4k\u00f6kent\u00e4st\u00e4 vaikuttaa teknologiseen immersioon ja ohjauksen laatu teknologiseen hallintaan. \n \nSosiaalista interaktiota voidaan lis\u00e4t\u00e4 sosiaalisilla mekaniikoilla, muokattavilla s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6ill\u00e4 ja videokeskustelun tai dynaamisten avatar-hahmojen avulla. Pelimaailman ja -hahmojen dynaamisuus ja yksityiskohtaisuus lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t temaattista immersiota, kun taas pelin yll\u00e4pidon automaatio ja merkitt\u00e4vien toimintojen manuaalinen toteutus vahvistavat toiminnallista immersiota.
