Afasia eli puheen tuottamisen ja ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4misen h\u00e4iri\u00f6 on seuraus aivovauriosta. Ty\u00f6n aineisto koostui 16 afasiapotilaan diffuusio- ja T1-painotetuista magneettikuvista sek\u00e4 Western Aphasia Battery -afasiatestin tuloksista. Tulosten pohjalta puheterapeutti oli jakanut potilaat kahteen ryhm\u00e4\u00e4n afasian vaikeusasteen mukaan. Diffuusiopainotetuista magneettikuvista tutkittiin aivojen valkean aineen rakenteita diffuusiotensorikuvantamisen avulla MATLAB-pohjaisella ExploreDTI-ty\u00f6kalulla. ExploreDTI:ll\u00e4 suoritettiin my\u00f6s korjaukset v\u00e4\u00e4ristymi\u00e4 ja artefakteja vastaan. Ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 keskityttiin arcuate fasciculus -hermorataan, joka on t\u00e4rkeimpi\u00e4 kielellisiin toimintoihin vaikuttavia yhteyksi\u00e4. Tarkoitus oli l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 hermoradoista selkeit\u00e4 piirteit\u00e4, joiden pohjalta potilasryhm\u00e4t ovat erotettavissa toisistaan. Vain viidelt\u00e4 potilaalta l\u00f6ydettiin arcuate fasciculus -rata vasemmalta puolelta aivoja ja 11 potilaalta oikealta puolelta. Koska potilaat olivat oikeak\u00e4tisi\u00e4 ja koska suurimmalla osalla oikeak\u00e4tisist\u00e4 ihmisist\u00e4 arcuate fasciculus sijaitsee tyypillisesti vasemmassa aivopuoliskossa, voidaan todeta, ett\u00e4 k\u00e4ytetty kuvantamis- ja mallinnusmenetelm\u00e4 ei sovellu afasian eri vaikeusasteiden havaitsemiseen. Aphasia is an inability to produce and understand language, and it is caused by a brain damage. The material of this work consisted of diffusion-weighted and T1-weighted images of 16 patients suffering from aphasia. The results from the Western Aphasia Battery test were also included. A speech therapist had divided the patients into two groups according to the severity of aphasia, based on the test results. White matter structure of the brain was examined from the diffusion-weighted images using diffusion tensor imaging with MATLAB-based tool called ExploreDTI. The corrections for distortions and artefacts were also performed with ExploreDTI. A nerve tract called arcuate fasciculus was in the focus, because it is one of the most important connections affecting linguistic functions. The idea was to find definite characteristics which can be used to classify the patient groups. Only five left-hand and 11 right-hand arcuate fasciculus tracts were discovered from the patients. Because all the patients were right-handed and because most of the time with right-handed people the arcuate fasciculus is located typically on the left side of the brain, it can be stated that the chosen imaging and modelling method is not suitable for detecting the severity of aphasia.
