Poiketen aikaisemmista tutkimuksista työssä on tutkittu aikaisempaa pidempiä polttoja, joiden avulla on parannettu palorintaman stationaarisen alueen statistiikkaa, ja yleisesti vähälle huomiolle jääneitä rajapintojen reunailmiöitä. Molemmissa tapauksissa tutkittuina suureina ovat korrelaatiofunktiosta saadut skaalauseksponentit (kasvu- ja karheuseksponentti) sekä korkeusfluktuuaatiojakauma ja sitä kuvaavat tunnusluvut vinous ja huipukkuus. Työssä käytiin läpi etenevien rajapintojen perusteoriaa eli Family--Vicsek-skaalauslaki, EW-yhtälö sekä yksinkertaisin eteneviä rajapintoja kuvaava KPZ-yhtälö. Myös kokeellinen laitteisto ja polttokoedatan analysointiin käytetyt algoritmit käytiin läpi. Koko poltoille tarkastellut korrelaatiofunktiot ja korkeusfluktuaatiojakauma osoittivat, että tarkasteltu paperinpolttodata ei vastaa KPZ-yhtälön ennustetta kasvueksponenttia lukuunottamatta. Kasvueksponentin käyttäytyminen ja aikaisemmin tehdyt tutkimukset kuitenkin viittaavat siihen, että karheuseksponentin ja korkeusfluktuaatiojakaumien huono käyttäytyminen johtuvat statistiikan puutteesta. Reunailmiöitä tarkasteltiin kahdelle eri leveyksiselle reunalle ja niiden tarkastelussa suurin huomio kiinnittyy korkeusfluktuaatiojakaumien käyttäytymiseen, sillä paperin vastakkaisten reunojen korkeusfluktuaatiojakaumien käyttäytyminen oli hyvin samankaltaista koko poltoille saadun korkeusfluktuaatiojakauman kanssa vaikka reunojen ja koko polttojen korrelaatifunktioiden välillä oli merkittävä ero. Tämä yllättävä havainto tarjoaa motivaation reunailmiöiden jatkotutkimukselle. In this thesis the work with the dynamics of the propagating 1+1-dimensional slow combustion fronts and it's connection to KPZ universality class, which has been done previously in University of Jyväskylä, were continued. The studies in this thesis differ from previous studies with longer measurements of the combustion front which helped to get more statistics from the stationary part of the dynamics, and the studies with widely ignored edge phenomena of the interfaces. In both cases scaling exponents (growth and roughness exponent), which are obtained from the correlation function, and the height fluctuation distribution and it's skewness and kurtosis were studied. In the thesis the basic theory of the propagating interfaces were explained, i.e. Family-Vicsek scaling law, EW equation and KPZ equation, which is the simplest equation to describe propagation of the interface, were gone trough. The experimental set-up and algorithms used to analyse the data were described. The results for the bulk of the combustion fronts where correlation function and height fluctuation distribution were studied are that growth exponent is the only characteristics which match with the KPZ equation's prediction. The behaviour of the growth exponent and the previous studies still implies that the behaviour of the roughness exponent and the height fluctuation distribution can be explained with lack of statistics. Edge phenomena were studied with two different sizes of edges and the unexpected result was that the behaviour of the height fluctuation distribution at the edges were really close to the behaviour of the height fluctuation distribution in the bulk. This behaviour was there although the behaviour of the correlation functions differed significantly when edges and bulk were compared. This surprising observation generates the motivation for the future studies of edge phenomena of the propagating interfaces.
