Psychosocial job strain means the factors that are related to e.g. organization of work and the social atmosphere work environment. Job strain has been associated with the health and work ability of employees. Harmful job strain is related to long-term psychological distress which may occur in a situation where individuals experience their resources to be too low to meet the demands of the work environment. Retirement intentions are referred to as employees own perceptions about the age they want to retire. These intentions become more common with older age. The intentional retirement age correlates strongly with the actual retirement age and thus it is important to identify factors leading to early retirement intentions.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether psychosocial job strain was associated with psychological distress and if they were associated to the preferred age of retirement. Furthermore, the aim was to study if psychological distress mediates the association between psychosocial job strain and the preferred age of retirement.

This study was based on Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development and particularly its latest data collection phase in 2009. At the follow-up the participants were aged 50 years and 271 out of the original study sample of 369 participated in the assessments. Psychological distress was evaluated with General Heath Questionnaire. Using questionnaires based on Karasek’s job content questionnaire and Finnish Institute of Occupational Health’s work stress questionnaire, psychosocial job strain was assessed with asking the participants about their experiences on work challenges, job control, time pressure, burnout and the social support and appreciation of the work organization. Preferred age of retirement age was inquired as part of an interview. Pearson’s correlation, Fisher’s Z-test and linear regression analysis were used as statistical methods.

Higher skill discretion and low psychological distress were connected to a preferred age of retirement among men (p <.05). Higher burnout level was associated with higher psychological distress in men (p <.01). Higher burnout and fewer job challenges were associated with higher psychological distress in women (p <.01). None of the work indicators were related to the preferred age of retirement in women. Psychological distress did not mediate the connection between psychosocial job strain and preferred age of retirement in this study.

The present findings indicate that it is important to have enough skill discretion at work to prevent psychological distress and to promote a higher preferred age of retirement. Psychological distress can be a risk factor for early retirement intentions among men. Higher psychological stress has been connected to higher risk of having mental disorders the findings of this present study highlight the role of psychosocial strain in experiencing psychological distress.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2019-07-05T08:22:24Z (GMT).
