Huippu-urheilu on tasapainoilua optimaalisen harjoittelun ja palautumisen v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Kun harjoittelu on eritt\u00e4in kuormittavaa, eik\u00e4 kokonaisuudessa huomioida palautumista ja lepoa riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti, muodostuu kehoon vakava ylikuormitustila, joka heikent\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6s suorituskyky\u00e4. Aiemman tutkimustietoon tukeutuen sykev\u00e4livaihtelun on havaittu olevan validi menetelm\u00e4, joka kuvaa erilaisten harjoituksien fysiologisia vasteita ja kehon kokonaiskuormitusta antaen siten tietoa, jonka avulla voidaan ehk\u00e4ist\u00e4 vakavia ylirasitustiloja. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen keskeisen\u00e4 tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, miten elimist\u00f6 palautuu erilaisista kovatehoisista harjoitusblokeista ja korreloivatko harjoitusblokkien fysiologista vastetta kuvaavat indikaattorit selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 esimerkiksi unen aikaisen sykev\u00e4livaihtelun ja kortisolitason v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4n lis\u00e4ksi tutkimuksen keskeisen\u00e4 tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, eroavatko aineenvaihdunnallisen kuormittuneisuuden eli kest\u00e4vyysblokin vaste ja hermo-lihas-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n kuormittuneisuuden eli voimablokin vaste sykev\u00e4livaihtelussa ja painottuvatko vasteet eri sykev\u00e4livaihtelumuuttujiin (esim. RMSSD tai LFP tai HFP). N\u00e4iden lis\u00e4ksi palautumista tutkittiin unen aikana. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, adaptoituuko keho kovatehoiseen harjoitteluun lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 syv\u00e4n unen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4, joka edist\u00e4\u00e4 palautumista. \nMenetelm\u00e4t. Kahdeksantoista fyysisesti aktiivista tervett\u00e4 mieskuntoilijaa (29\u00b16 v; 180,4 \u00b1 6,4 cm; 79,4 \u00b1 11,7 kg; 54 \u00b1 6 ml/kg/min) osallistui tutkimukseen. Tutkimus koostui kolmesta erilaisesta harjoitusblokista \u2013 maksimikest\u00e4vyys, maksimivoima ja hypertofinen voima, jotka jokainen tutkittava suoritti samassa j\u00e4rjestyksess\u00e4. Harjoitusblokeilla kovatehoisia kuormituksia toistettiin kolmena per\u00e4kk\u00e4isen\u00e4 iltana, jonka j\u00e4lkeen oli nelj\u00e4n p\u00e4iv\u00e4n palautusjakso ennen seuraavaa harjoitusblokkia. Harjoitusblokkien aikana palautumistilaa mitattiin WHO:n polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometritestill\u00e4, kevennyshyppytestill\u00e4, kortisolimittauksella, subjektiivisilla arvioilla kehon kuormittuneisuudesta ja unen laadusta. Sykev\u00e4livaihtelua ja unen laatua mitattiin Emfit-unimonitorilla jokaisena tutkimusjakson y\u00f6n\u00e4. Harjoitusblokkien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 tilastollisia merkitsevyyksi\u00e4 analysoitiin Friedmanin ja Wilcoxonin testeill\u00e4 ja korrelaatiota Spearmannin korrelaatiokertoimella. Tilastollisen merkitsevyyden rajaksi asetettiin p<0.05. \nTulokset. Tilastollisesti merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4 muutoksia ei havaittu palautumismittauksissa (WHO:n polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometritesti, kevennyshyppytesti), kortisolitasoissa, subjektiivisessa kuormittuneisuudessa, sykev\u00e4livaihtelussa, unen laadussa tai univaiheiden suhteellisissa osuuksissa eri harjoitusblokkien aikana tai eri harjoitusblokkien v\u00e4lill\u00e4, vaikka tutkittavat kokivat kuormitusp\u00e4iv\u00e4t fyysisesti ja henkisesti raskaiksi. Kolmasosa (33 %) tutkittavista keskytti tutkimuksen. Trendein\u00e4 havaittiin, ett\u00e4 RMSSD (root-mean-square of differences between adjacent R-R intervals; per\u00e4kk\u00e4isten sykev\u00e4lien keskim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4inen vaihtelu) arvot olivat harjoitusblokeilla matalampia ja erityisesti hypertofisella harjoitusblokilla tulosten hajonta oli selke\u00e4sti v\u00e4hentynyt. Lis\u00e4ksi unipisteet v\u00e4heniv\u00e4t (trendi) ja unen kesto lyhentyi systemaattisesti harjoitusblokeilla, ja keskihajonta v\u00e4heni harjoitusblokkien aikana. \nPohdinta ja johtop\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6kset. Tutkimuksessa tehtiin kolme p\u00e4\u00e4havaintoa: 1) Elimist\u00f6 pystyy adaptoitumaan lyhytkestoisiin kolmen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n kovatehoisiin harjoitusblokkeihin, eiv\u00e4tk\u00e4 ne aiheuta merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 ylikuormitusta, vaikka tutkittavat subjektiivisesti kokisivat harjoitusblokit kuormittavina. 2) RMSSD-arvot olivat matalampia (trendi) harjoitusblokkien aikana, mutta yhteytt\u00e4 ei havaittu kortisolitason kanssa. 3) Harjoitusblokit eiv\u00e4t muuttaneet unen vaiheita, mutta trendin\u00e4 havaittiin, ett\u00e4 unipisteet laskivat ja unenkesto lyhentyi harjoitusblokkien aikana, joten kovatehoisella harjoittelulla saattaa olla yhteys uneen. To improve maximal endurance or strength performance, an optimal physiological training load is required. Inadequate recovery time facilitate to fatigue and underperformance. Post-exercise heart rate variability (HRV) has been shown to be a valid method to evaluate the training load (Kaikkonen ym. 2010; Kaikkonen ym. 2012). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the HRV, selective physiological indicators and sleep could assess cumulative metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue induced by the short-term high-intensity training blocks. We hypothesized that following high-intensity training block HRV remains longer declined level compared to strength training blocks (Buccheit ym. 2004; Chen ym. 2011; Hynynen ym. 2010). Also we assumed total sleep time increases, sleep efficiency is higher, wake time is less after onset, in REM sleep increases and slow wave sleep (SWS) increases (Driver & Taylor 2010; Myllym\u00e4ki ym. 2011) following high-intensity endurance training block, and sleep parameters remains constant over the strength training blocks (K\u00f6llning ym. 2015). \nMethods. The subjects were endurance and strength trained men (n=18); 29\u00b16 yrs; 180 \u00b1 6 cm; 79 \u00b1 12 kg; VO2max 54 \u00b1 6 ml/kg/min. Study included three different training blocks; high-intensity endurance, maximal strength and hypertrophy strength. Three consecutive high-intensity late-night exercise sessions followed by four days of recovery period before the new training block. WHO\u2019s cycling fitness test, countermovement jump test, saliva cortisol concentrations, subjective perceived stress and subjective quality of sleep were measured at mornings before the training blocks and following mornings after the training sessions. Emfit sleep monitor measured HRV and sleep quality every night throughout the research period. The variance analysis of repeated measurements and non-parametric Friedman and Wilcoxon tests were used in the statistical analysis of the results. The correlations between the variables were analysed using Spearman correlation tests.The limit of the statistical significance was p < 0.05. \nResults. Although subjects experienced the exercise sessions physically very demanding, no statistically significant differences were found between the single exercise sessions or between the training blocks in performance measurements (WHO\u2019s cycling test and a countermovement jump test), cortisol levels, subjective stress and HRV. Statistically significant differences were not observed in sleep or relative portion of sleep phases during any training blocks. Some trends were observed as RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive R\u2013R Differences) sleep score and sleep duration were systematically lower after training blocks than recovery periods. \nDiscussion and conclusion. Based on this study, short-term high-intensity training blocks are well tolerated in physically active men as they were not associated to significant physiological fatigue or associated with the disturbances in sleep quality or HRV. It can be concluded that metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue are associated to heart rate variability so that if there were not metabolic or neuromuscular fatigue, there were either changes in autonomic nervous system. Furthermore, in this study found cortisol did not changes after single or three consecutive exercise sessions. Stability of the cortisol is related to heart rate variability changes (no changes). Additionally, the results of present study suggest that quality of the sleep or relative portion of sleep phases during any training blocks.
