Osa n\u00e4ist\u00e4 tutkimuksista on keskittynyt siihen, miellet\u00e4\u00e4nk\u00f6 ruoanlaitto naisellisena vastuuteht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 ja jopa yhten\u00e4 feminiinisyyden ilmentym\u00e4n\u00e4, sek\u00e4 millaisia tuntemuksia t\u00e4ss\u00e4 teht\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 onnistuminen tai ep\u00e4onnistuminen on naisissa her\u00e4tt\u00e4nyt. Toisaalta moni tutkimus on my\u00f6s kartoittanut naisten sy\u00f6miseen liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 ajatusmaailmaa ja sen vaikutusta kehonkuvaan, yleens\u00e4 syventyen naisten taipumuksiin tarkkailla jatkuvasti ruokansa laatua ja rajoittaa sen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 laihuuden tavoittelemiseksi. \n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen kohteena ovat erityisesti amerikkalaiset naisten aikakausilehdet ja niiss\u00e4 esitetyt representaatiot ruoasta osana nykynaisen el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 sek\u00e4 ruoanlaiton ett\u00e4 sy\u00f6misen n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Tutkimusaineistoksi valittiin yhteens\u00e4 100 artikkelia nelj\u00e4n suositun naistenlehden verkkosivuilta, 25 jokaisesta lehdest\u00e4. N\u00e4m\u00e4 lehdet ovat Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Glamour and Good Housekeeping. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys muodostuu kahden tutkimusmenetelm\u00e4n systemaattisesta sovellutuksesta; analyysin ensimm\u00e4isess\u00e4 vaiheessa aineisto k\u00e4siteltiin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4en Grounded Theory \u2013metodia, jonka j\u00e4lkeen syv\u00e4llisemm\u00e4n pohdinnan tukena k\u00e4ytettiin feministist\u00e4 kriittist\u00e4 diskurssianalyysia ja Faircloughin metodia. \n\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 ruoanlaittoa kotioloissa kuvataan hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n. T\u00e4m\u00e4n perusteella voidaankin p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4, ett\u00e4 ruoanlaitto aiheena ei kiinnosta lehtien lukijakuntaa kenties sen liiallisen arkip\u00e4iv\u00e4isyyden tai arjesta katoamisen vuoksi. Ne artikkelit, jotka kuvailevat naisten kotiruoanlaittoa esitt\u00e4v\u00e4t sen osana erityisesti perheellisten naisten el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 tai harrastuksenomaisena kiinnostuksenkohteena. Ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 puolestaan naisia kuvataan joko ruoka-alan yritt\u00e4jin\u00e4 tai huippukokkeina. N\u00e4ille yhteinen ominaisuus on sekoittaa Williamsin (2012) m\u00e4\u00e4rittelem\u00e4n resistentin ja traditionaalisen naiseuden piirteit\u00e4, luoden vaikutelman vahvoista ja kilpailuhenkisist\u00e4, mutta pehmeit\u00e4 arvoja korostavista naisista ruokateollisuudessa. Uravalintana ruoanlaittoa kuvataan my\u00f6s itsens\u00e4 toteuttamisen kanavana ja yhten\u00e4 mahdollisena reittin\u00e4 amerikkalaisen unelman saavuttamiseksi. Tutkimuksen perusteella naisten sy\u00f6mist\u00e4 puolestaan oh jaa huoli terveellisyydest\u00e4 ja el\u00e4m\u00e4ntyylin viestiminen ruokatuotemerkkien kuluttamisen avulla. Terveellisyyden alle nivoutuvat mm. k\u00e4sitteet terveest\u00e4 ja kauniista kehosta, kehon sis\u00e4isest\u00e4 hyvinvoinnista sek\u00e4 kohtuullisuudesta. Tietyt ruokatuotteet ja -br\u00e4ndit esitet\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s nonverbaalisina viestimin\u00e4, joiden avulla kuluttaja voi ilmaista el\u00e4m\u00e4ntyyli\u00e4\u00e4n ja statustaan.
