Tulokset on saatu SPSS Statistics 24 -ohjelmalla ajamalla “Frequencies”.
The aim of the study was to find out the sports with the most dropouts, reasons for dropping out considering age, sex, sport and recreational orientation. The Physical Activity Behaviours of Children and Adolescents in Finland (LIITU) study consisted of 609 randomly sampled elementary schools taken from the school register. Of those, 285 Finnish and 65 Swedish speaking schools participated in the study. Of the schools, 57 percent partook in the Finnish Schools on the Move program. The LIITU 2016 questionnaire was answered by 7,565 children and adolescents in either language. Questions regarding participating in sports club activities consisted of 2,695 (48.5%) boys and 2,861 (51.5%) girls. All in all, there were 5,561 respondents. Of these, 4,701 were Finnish speaking whereas 860 were Swedish speaking. Of the respondents, 1,976 (35.5%) were fifth-graders (about 11-year-olds), 1,939 (34.9%) seventh-graders (about 13-year-olds) and 1,646 (29.6%) ninth-graders (about 15-year-olds). There were 1,421 (26.5%) students who had participated in exercise or sports in a sports club before but not anymore. The most practiced sports were soccer, dance and competitive dance, floorball, horseback riding, ice hockey and track and field. The results have been obtained by driving “Frequencies” in SPSS Statistics 24.
The most common reasons for dropping out were lack of enjoyment in a team or group (somewhat 36.7%, very much 23.6%), boredom of sport (37.6%; 22.6%), the hobby not being rousing enough (40.1%; 16.9%), lack of fun (35.0%; 17.0%), or that there was something else to do (34.8%; 15.9%). Boys regarded boredom of sport, that there was something else to do, not having enough time to be with friends, moving to a new locality, and weak success in competitions, as greater causes of dropping out in comparison to girls. Girls, on the other hand, found that wanting to take part in another sport, wanting to invest in studies, and the cost of participating being too high, were greater reasons for dropout than they were for boys.
There was a stronger association between wanting to take part in another sport and dropout for fifth-graders than there was for seventh- and ninth-graders. There were differences between reasons for dropping out among the five biggest sports as well as among the different recreational orientations. In the future, it would be interesting to examine the most common factors that would make children and youth, who have dropped out, return to sports clubs’ activities. After all, nearly four fifths of children and adolescents have reported their willingness to restart practicing in a sports club again.
