Elinympäristöjen ennallistamisesta on tullut merkittävä keino hidastaa luonnon monimuotoisuuden köyhtymistä ja ylläpitää ekosysteemipalveluita. Ennallistamisen vaikutuksia tutkittiin vertailemalla ennallistettujen ja luonnontilaisten soiden lintujen laji- ja reviirimääriä ennen ja jälkeen soiden ennallistamista. Aineisto kerättiin Länsi-Suomesta 11 ennallistetulta suolta vuosien 2010–2018 aikana lintujen kartoituslaskentana ja analysoitiin lineaaristen sekamallien avulla. Aineisto kerättiin ennen ennallistamista ja välittömästi ennallistamisen jälkeen keskimäärin 2-3 vuotena. Lisäksi aineiston kerääminen toistettiin kaikilla kohteilla vuonna 2018. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten elinympäristöjen ennallistaminen on vaikuttanut soiden lintulajistoon sekä onko ennallistettujen soiden ja luonnontilaisten soiden välillä havaittavissa eroa lintujen laji- ja reviirimäärissä. Ennallistetuilla soilla oli enemmän lintulajeja kuin luonnontilaisilla soilla, mutta luonnontilaisilla soilla oli enemmän suolintuja ja niiden reviirejä. Suolintujen reviirimäärät laskivat luonnontilaisilla soilla tutkimuksen aikana, mutta ennallistetuilla niissä ei tapahtunut muutoksia. Tulokset viittaavat, että ennallistaminen oli vaikuttanut positiivisesti suolintujen reviirimääriin. Suomen nykyinen soiden suojelu ja suojelualueet eivät kuitenkaan riitä yksin turvaamaan suolintujen säilymistä. Pitkäaikaisia seurantoja tulisi ylläpitää linnuston monimuotoisuudessa tapahtuvien muutosten selvittämiseksi. The populations of mire birds in Finland have declined during recent decades and the risk of extinctions has increased. The most severe threats to mire birds have been anthropogenic actions such as peatland drainage, habitat fragmentation and climate change, which are changing the habitats. Thus, ecosystem restoration has become an important tool to slow down the biodiversity loss and to maintain ecosystem services. In this thesis, the effects of habitat restoration as well as how the restoration has affected the number of mire bird species and territories were studied. The data was collected in Western Finland from 11 restored peatlands during 2010–2018 using the Finnish bird line-transect survey method. It was then analyzed with linear mixed effect model comparing the number of mire bird species and their territories between pristine and restored sites before and after restoration. Bird monitoring was done before restoration and after approximately 2-3 years. It was also repeated in 2018 in all peatlands. The aim of the study was to examine how ecosystem restoration has affected the mire birds. The study revealed that restored sites had more bird species than pristine sites, but pristine sites had more mire bird species and territories. However, in pristine sites the number of mire bird territories declined during study period but in restored sites there were no changes. According to this study restoration actions had a positive effect on mire bird territories. However, Finnish peatland conservation actions and conservation area network might not be effective enough to protect or maintain the mire bird populations. Long term surveys are needed to observe and investigate the future trends in biodiversity.
