Tutkimus tälle työlle suoritettiin tapaustutkimuksena, jonka kohteena oli monikansallinen organisaatio valmistavan ja rakennusteollisuuden alalta. Tapaustutkimus toteutettiin operatiivisen tason sekä keskijohdon työntekijöiden näkökulmaa tarkastellen sen sijaan, että asiaa olisi tutkittu ylimmän johdon näkökulmasta, joka tyypillisesti on lähtökohtana fuusioita ja yritysostoja tutkivassa kirjallisuudessa. Tutkielma löysi viisi olennaista estettä integraatiolle, jotka ovat kommunikaatio, puutteellinen organisaatiorakenne, IT järjestelmät, tiimien muodostaminen sekä suunnan ja ohjauksen puuttuminen. Näistä viidestä kohdasta neljä, toisin sanoen kaikki paitsi puutteellinen organisaatiorakenne, oli ennakoitavissa, sekä voidaan myös todentaa olemassa olevan fuusioihin ja integraatioihin liittyvän kirjallisuuden pohjalta. Organisaatiorakenteeseen ja niiden integroimiseen liittyen löytyy runsaasti tutkimuksia, mutta tämän tutkielman kirjallisuuskatsaus ei löytänyt mitään, mikä käsittäisi organisaatiorakenteen muokkaamisen menestystekijänä fuusion jälkeisessä integraatiossa. This thesis studies the process of post-merger integration, more specifically how it could be implemented effectively in a way that the most prominent barriers are recognized and taken into consideration in order to achieve full integration as smoothly as possible. The study for this thesis was conducted as a case study of a multinational organization in manufacturing and construction industry and took the perspective of the operative and middle management level employees as oppose to examining the topic from management perspective which is typical of mergers and acquisitions literature. The study discovered five main hindrances for integration, namely communication, insufficient organizational structure, IT systems, forming teams, and lack of direction and guidance. Four out of these five points, that is all except insufficient organizational structure, were anticipated and can also be confirmed based on prior literature. Regarding organizational structure, there is an abundance of literature studying organizational structures and their integration but the literature review for this thesis did not find anything that would consider adjusting organizational structures as a success factor for post-merger integration.
