Tutkimus toteutettiin kvantitatiivisia menetelmi\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4. Analyysin aineistona k\u00e4ytettiin 242 eri instrumentein improvisoitua sooloa maailmanlaajuisesti menestyksekk\u00e4immilt\u00e4 jazz-artisteilta. Tarkoituksena oli yht\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 tutkia mink\u00e4laisena jazz-musiikin tonaalisuusk\u00e4site n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyy, kun sit\u00e4 verrataan l\u00e4nsimaiseen tonaalisuusk\u00e4sitykseen sek\u00e4 toisaalta erottaako jazzmusiikin rikas rytmiikka sen l\u00e4nsimaisesta metri-k\u00e4sityksest\u00e4? Kolmanneksi haluttiin n\u00e4hd\u00e4 onko tonaalisuus ja metri yhteydess\u00e4 toisiinsa t\u00e4m\u00e4n aineiston valossa?\n\nAineistosta muodostettiin sek\u00e4 s\u00e4velluokkaprofiili ett\u00e4 s\u00e4velalukkeiden sijoittumisen perusteella metrinen profiili. Niit\u00e4 verrattiin l\u00e4nsimaisen musiikin lainalaisuuksia edustaviin referenssijakaumiin, joita olivat Krumhanslin ja Kesslerin (1982) empiirinen tonaalinen hierarkia ja Lerdahlin ja Jackendoffin (1983) normatiivinen iskuhierarkia. Jazz-improvisaation yhteytt\u00e4 referensseihin tarkasteltiin korrelaatiokertoimen avulla kokonaisaineiston tasolla sek\u00e4 jazzmusiikin sis\u00e4isten tyylikohtaisten jaotteluiden tasolla. Oletuksena oli, ett\u00e4 jazzmusiikin soivat tonaalis-metriset rakenteet ovat yhtenevi\u00e4 l\u00e4nsimaisen musiikin tonaalisten ja metristen rakenteiden kanssa. \n\nEnnakko-oletus sai tutkimuksesta tukea. Tulosten perusteella tonaalinen rakenne n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyi jazz-improvisaatiossa samankaltaisena kuin referenssiaineistossa huolimatta jazziin kuuluvasta kromatiikasta ja melodisista j\u00e4nnitteist\u00e4. Edes improvisaatioiden sis\u00e4iset v\u00e4liaikaiset modulaatiot eiv\u00e4t vaikuttaneet tonaliteettia h\u00e4m\u00e4rt\u00e4v\u00e4sti. Synkopoiva rytminen koristelu on keskeinen osa jazzmusiikkia, mutta tuloksista k\u00e4vi ilmi sen v\u00e4h\u00e4isyys improviaatioissa erityisesti esitystempojen noustessa. Siten my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n metrin iskuhierarkia ei eronnut normatiivisesta vertailukohdastaan niin, ett\u00e4 voisi todeta jazz-rytmiikan toimivan siit\u00e4 irrallaan.
