Suuressa osassa kunnista valinnaista A2-oppim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 ei tarjota lainkaan ja niiss\u00e4kin kunnissa, joissa A2-kieli on tarjolla, kielivalinnat ovat j\u00e4\u00e4neet v\u00e4h\u00e4isiksi ja peruskoulussa muita vieraita kieli\u00e4 kuin englantia ja ruotsia opiskelevien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 on ollut laskussa jo pitk\u00e4\u00e4n. Kielivalinnan v\u00e4henemiseen vaikuttavat opetuksen j\u00e4rjest\u00e4miseen liittyvien seikkojen lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s motivaatio ja asenteet vieraiden kielten oppimista kohtaan.\n\nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 pro gradu -tutkielmassa selvitettiin teoriaohjaavan sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla A2-kielen valitsemiseen tai valitsematta j\u00e4tt\u00e4miseen johtaneita syit\u00e4 alakoulun kolmasluokkalaisten huoltajien n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Huoltajien rooli kielivalinnoissa on aikaisemmissa kansainv\u00e4lisiss\u00e4 ja kansallisissa tutkimuksissa osoittautunut merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4ksi, ja etenkin huoltajien asenteilla ja heid\u00e4n oppijoille antamallaan tuella on katsottu olevan vaikutusta siihen, miten vieraita kieli\u00e4 valitaan koulussa, eli ns. valintamotivaation kehittymiseen. Valintaa tarkasteltiin vanhempien roolin lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s koulun ja opettajien toiminnan kannalta. Etenkin tuoreet muokkausehdotukset D\u00f6rnyein motivaatioteoriaan (L2 Motivational Self System), joiden mukaan kielikohtainen ideaalimin\u00e4 tulisi n\u00e4hd\u00e4 laajempana monikielisen\u00e4 ideaalimin\u00e4n\u00e4, toimivat taustana t\u00e4t\u00e4 tutkielmaa varten laaditusta kyselylomakkeesta saadun aineiston analysoinnille.
