Jätevedenpuhdistamot ovat tärkeä mikromuovien kauttakulkureitti ympäristöön. Tässä työssä tutkittiin Jyväskylän Nenäinniemen jätevedenpuhdistamon poistotehoa mikromuovien osalta, erityishuomiona vuonna 2018 valmistuneen uuden tertiäärikäsittelyn, eli 10 µm huokoiskoon kiekkosuodattimen, vaikutus poistotehoon. Tulevasta jätevedestä, primääri-, sekundääri-, ja tertiäärikäsittelyn jälkeisistä vesistä sekä anaerobisesti käsitellystä linkokuivatusta lietteestä otetuista kertanäytteistä eristettiin mikromuovit entsymaattisesti. Näytteistä laskettiin halkaisijaltaan 20 µm – 5 mm mikromuovien määrä ja niiden kemiallinen koostumus määritettiin Raman-mikroskopialla. Tutkimus osoitti, että Nenäinniemen jätevedenpuhdistamo poisti jäteveden mikromuoveista 99 %. Jätevedestä poistetut mikromuovit päätyivät jätevesilietteeseen. Yleisimmät näytteistä eristetyt muovilaadut olivat polyeteeni (PE), polypropeeni (PP) ja polyeteeni tereftalaatti (PET). Primäärikäsittelyt poistivat tulevan jäteveden pitoisuudesta 91 % ja sekundäärikäsittelyssä muovien pitoisuus nelinkertaistui. Kiekkosuodatin poisti sekundäärikäsitellystä jätevedestä 97 % mikromuoveista. Concern about the occurrence of microplastics (MPs, polymer particles < 5 mm) in the environment has risen of late. In this study the MP removal capability of Nenäinniemi wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was studied as well as the role that a tertiary treatment, a 10 µm pore size disc filtration installed in 2018, played in the MP removal efficiency. Point samples from wastewater influent, primary, secondary and tertiary effluent and anaerobically treated drained sludge were taken, and MPs were extracted from the samples using an enzymatic purification protocol. MPs 20 µm – 5 mm in diameter were counted, and their chemical composition analysed using Raman-microscopy. The Nenäinniemi WWTP was found to remove 99 % of microplastics, and removed microplastics were deposited into drained sludge. The most common polymers encountered were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethene terepthalate (PET). Primary treatments removed 91 % of the influent MP concentration. Surprisingly, in secondary treatment, the MP concentration quadrupled. Disc filtration, however, removed 97 % of the microplastics remaining after secondary treatment.
