Tutkimuksessa et\u00e4opetus n\u00e4htiin yhten\u00e4 teknologiaa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4v\u00e4n verkko-opetuksen muotona, jolla tavoitetaan opettajasta fyysisesti et\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 oleva oppilas. Tutkimusaineisto koostui nelj\u00e4n perusopetusik\u00e4isen ja et\u00e4opetusta saaneen oppilaan teemahaastatteluista. \n\nAineistosta l\u00f6ydettiin vuorovaikutuksen kautta tarkasteltuna kolmen eri tason osallisuutta; Oppilaan aktiivista osallisuutta, oppilaan passiivista osallisuutta sek\u00e4 oppilaan osallistamista tai osallisuuden ep\u00e4\u00e4mist\u00e4. Aktiivisessa ja passiivisessa osallisuudessa oppilaan osallisuuteen vaikuttajana tekij\u00e4n\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyi p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa oppilas itse. Oppilaan osallistamiseen tai osallisuuden ep\u00e4\u00e4misen tasolla oppilaan osallisuuteen vaikuttavana tekij\u00e4n\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyi p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa opettaja tai jokin koulun arjessa vaikuttava k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6. Vuorovaikutuksen havaittiin n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyv\u00e4t joko kaksisuuntaisena oppilaan ja opettajan tai oppilaan ja vertaisten v\u00e4lill\u00e4, yksisuuntaisena opettajalta oppilaalle tai vuorovaikutuksen puuttumisena. Lis\u00e4ksi m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisesti osallisuutta havaittiin olevan niukasti ja se toteutui p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti vain oppituntitilanteissa. \n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 kehitett\u00e4ess\u00e4 lapsisy\u00f6p\u00e4potilaiden tai muiden pitk\u00e4aikaissairaiden lasten opetusta ja et\u00e4opetusta. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan my\u00f6s p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4, ett\u00e4 et\u00e4opetus on Suomessa varsin heikosti tunnettu tapa j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 perusopetusta erityistilanteissa. In this study, distance education is understood as a form of online education, by which a student situated apart from the normal, physical school environment is reached. The study was based on the thematic interviews of four basic education students who have participated in distance education. \n\nThree different levels of participation were identified from the research data; active participation by the student, passive participation by the student, and forced or denied participation of the student. On the levels of active and passive participation, the main factor affecting participation appeared to be the student himself or herself. On the levels of forced and denied participation, the main factor affecting participation appeared to be the teacher or the daily practices at the school. Interaction appeared either as a two-way process between the student and the teacher or between the student and his/her peers, as a one-way process from the teacher to the student, or as a lack of interaction altogether. Overall, the results illustrate that the amount of participation was scarce and took primarily place during lesson-situations. \n\nThe results of this study can be utilized in developing distance education practices for childhood cancer patients and children with other long-term illnesses. One of the conclusions of the study is that distance education does not seem to be a well-known way of organizing basic education in such special situations in Finland.
