Tässä Pro Gradu-työssä tutkin, kuinka Roundup® Flex vaikuttaa japaninviiriäisten (Coturnix japonica) poikasten kasvuun ja kehitykseen. Viiriäiset jaettiin kahteen ryhmä (n=38), ja niille syötettiin rehua, joka oli joko käsittelemätöntä tai käsitelty Roundup® Flex-aineella (laskettu pitoisuus 350 mg/kg). Molemmissa ryhmissä oli saman verran naaraita ja koiraita. Seurasin poikasten painon ja siiven kasvun sekä sukukypsyyden kehittymistä. Mittasin myös niiden oksidatiivisen stressin eri markkereita (glutationi S-transferaasi entsyymin (GST) aktiivisuutta sekä lipidien peroksidaatiota). Roundup® ei vaikuttanut lintujen painoon tai kasvuun. Roundup® käsittelynalaisen ryhmän poikasten höyhenpeitteessä oli kuitenkin muutoksia ja siipisulkia oli vähemmän suhteessa kontrolliryhmän lintuihin. Käsittely ei ollut myöskään vaikusta koirasviiriäisten sukukypsyyden kehittymiseen mutta Roundup® ryhmän naaraiden muninta alkoi myöhemmin kuin kontrolliryhmän. Fysiologisella tasolla Roundup® ei vaikuttanut GST entsyymin aktiivisuuteen. Lipidien peroksidaation taso laski vähemmän Roundup® ryhmässä 3 viikon iästä 7 viikon ikään kuin kontrolliryhmässä. Tuloksieni mukaan Roundup® voi aiheuttaa vahinkoa solujen lipideille sekä voi vaikuttaa viiriäisten höyhenpeitteen kehittymiseen. Tulokseni näyttävät, että Roundup® voi olla haitallinen linnuille. Roundup® is a globally used herbicide which has glyphosate as an active ingredient. Roundup® is considered to be relatively safe for animals and humans since the affected shikimate metabolism is only present in plants and some microbes. Recent studies contradict this assumption and suggest that Roundup® can cause oxidative stress and affect the growth and maturity of the animals. I tested if, Roundup® affects growth, oxidative status and maturity of the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). I divided 76 chicks (males and females were divided into groups as evenly as possible) into treatment groups: glyphosate and control. The glyphosate group received feed treated with Roundup® (glyphosate concentration counted to be 350 mg/kg) and the other group got nontreated feed. I measured growth of chicks and followed their development into maturity. I also collected blood samples twice to measure oxidative status (glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme and peroxidation of lipids) of chicks at ages 3 and 7 weeks. Roundup® did not influence growth or maturity of the quail chicks. But there was 4 days delay in egg production in the Roundup® group compared to control group. Furthermore, there were no differences in GST enzyme activity. The lipid peroxidation levels of the Roundup® treatment group dropped less from age 3 to 7 weeks than in the control group. Plumage and primaries developed more poorly in Roundup® group compared to the control birds. My results suggest that Roundup® can cause damage to lipids and that Roundup® could especially affect feather growth of birds that are under stress caused by their living environment or the feed. My results show that Roundup® can be harmful to birds.
