Mit\u00e4\u00e4n tutkimusta ei kuitenkaan ole tehty siit\u00e4, miten uhanalainen Margaritifera margaritifera\u2014joka on aikaisemmin esiintynyt (ja voi esiinty\u00e4 viel\u00e4 nyky\u00e4\u00e4nkin paikoittain) hyvin suurina tiheyksin\u00e4\u2014vaikuttaa jokiekosysteemiin ja veden laatuun. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia jokihelmisimpukoiden vaikutuksia jokiin analysoimalla veden laatuparametreja sek\u00e4 kasviplanktonin ja zooplanktonin tiheytt\u00e4 kahdessa pohjois-suomalaisessa, l\u00e4hekk\u00e4in sijaitsevassa joessa, joista toisessa esiintyy tihe\u00e4 jokihelmisimpukkakanta, mutta toisessa simpukoita ei ole. Tutkimus tehtiin ker\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 vesin\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 ja suorittamalla mittauksia paikan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 500 metrin matkalla kymmenest\u00e4 pisteest\u00e4 50 metrin v\u00e4lein jokien yl\u00e4puolella sijaitsevasta j\u00e4rvest\u00e4 alkaen. Tutkitut muuttujat olivat veden l\u00e4mp\u00f6tila, s\u00e4hk\u00f6njohtavuus, pH, suspendoituneet kiintoaineet, liuennut happi, fluorimetriset estimaatit sinilev\u00e4lle ja klorofylli-a:lle, sek\u00e4 kasviplanktoninja zooplanktonin tiheys ja lajisto. Arvioitu jokihelmisimpukkam\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 tutkitulla 500 metrin matkalla oli 32000 yksil\u00f6\u00e4. Jokien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 eroja mitattujen muuttujien k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymisess\u00e4 suhteessa et\u00e4isyyteen j\u00e4rvest\u00e4 tutkittiin regressioanalyysill\u00e4. Tulokset viittasivat siihen, ett\u00e4 M. margaritifera alentaa siniviherlevien, klorofylli-a:n ja liuenneen hapen pitoisuuksia sek\u00e4 kasvuplanktonin ja zooplanktonin tiheytt\u00e4. The endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera used to occur and can still occasionally occur in high densities. However, no study has been conducted regarding how M. margaritifera influences river ecosystem and water quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of M. margaritifera on the boreal river through analysing water quality parameters, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Thus, two closely located rivers\u2014 M. margaritifera river and control river (no mussel)\u2014in northern Finland were compared using water samples and in situ measurements performed at 50 m intervals from the first 500 m section downstream from the headwater lake of both rivers. Variables studied included water temperature, conductivity, pH, total suspended solids, optical dissolved oxygen and fluorometric estimates of blue-green algae and chlorophyll-a, as well as density and species composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton, in addition to M. margaritifera count. The estimated number of M. margaritifera in 500 m study section was about 32000. The response of measured variables in relation to the distance from the lake to the rivers were studied by regression analysis.
