Kognitiivisessa prosessoinnissa alfan tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n reflektoivan esimerkiksi h\u00e4iri\u00f6tekij\u00f6iden ehk\u00e4isemist\u00e4 prosessin aikana. Aivojen visuaalisten alueiden tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n sijaitsevan takaraivon aivokuorella. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkielmassa halusin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, miten visuaalinen inhibitio eroaa helppojen ja vaikeiden visuaalisten h\u00e4iri\u00f6kuvien v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Halusin my\u00f6s selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 korreloivatko h\u00e4iri\u00f6naikainen visuaalisen aivokuoren alfa-aktiivisuus ja visuaalisessa ty\u00f6muistiteht\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4minen toistensa kanssa. Hypoteeseina esitin, ett\u00e4 helpot ja vaikeat visuaaliset h\u00e4iri\u00f6tekij\u00e4t aikaansaavat erilaiset alfa-vasteet ja ett\u00e4 voimakkaampi h\u00e4iri\u00f6naikainen alfa-aktiivisuus korreloi paremman ty\u00f6muistisuorituksen kanssa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin visuaalista ty\u00f6muistiteht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 visuaalisen h\u00e4iri\u00f6tekij\u00e4n kanssa. K\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 oli sek\u00e4 helppoja ett\u00e4 vaikeita visuaalisia h\u00e4iri\u00f6kuvia. Alfa-aktiivisuus takaraivon alueella mitattiin kahdeltakymmenelt\u00e4kahdeksalta koehenkil\u00f6lt\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en magnetoenkefalografiaa. Koehenkil\u00f6t olivat syntyneet vuosina 1935-1946. Tulokset paljastavat, ett\u00e4 helppojen ja vaikeiden visuaalisten h\u00e4iri\u00f6iden aikainen alfa-aktiivisuus poikkeavat toisistaan. Helppo h\u00e4iri\u00f6kuva aiheuttaa aivoissa erilaisen alfa-aktiivisuuden modulaation kuin vaikea h\u00e4iri\u00f6kuva. Alpha activity (10 Hz) is generally known to reflect rest or inhibition in human brain. In cognitive processing alpha oscillations reflect for example distractor inhibition. Brains visual areas are known to locate in occipital cortex. In this thesis I want to solve how visual inhibition differs between easy and difficult visual distractor pictures. I want also solve whether occipital alpha activity during distraction and visual working memory task performance correlate. My hypothesis is that easy and difficult distractor pictures lead to different occipital alpha activity states and that higher occipital alpha activity during distraction picture predict better performance in visual working memory task. \r\nIn this study we used visual working memory task with visual distractor. There was both easy and difficult distractor pictures. Alpha power in occipital cortex during working memory task was measured from 28 older adults born between years 1935 and 1946 using magnetoencephalography. The results reveal that there is difference between occipital alpha activity during either easy or difficult distractor pictures. Easy distractor picture leads to different modulation of occipital alpha than difficult distractor picture.
