Uraanin biosaatavuuteen vaikuttavat vallitsevat vesistön olosuhteet, esimerkiksi liuenneen orgaanisen hiilen määrä, minkä seurauksena uraanin myrkyllisyyttä on tärkeää arvioida paikallisissa olosuhteissa. Tietoa tarvitaan esimerkiksi kaivosteollisuuden ympäristövaikutusten arvioimiseen Uraanin kemiallista myrkyllisyyttä tutkittiin sekä suomalaisissa järvivesissä että synteettisessä makeassa vedessä, vaihtelevissa liuenneen orgaanisen hiilen (DOC) pitoisuuksissa. Kokeissa käytettiin kahta levälajia, Desmodesmus subspicatus ja Raphidocelis subcapitata, lajien välisen herkkyyden vertailemiseksi. Tämän työn tarkoituksena on lisätä ymmärrystä uraanin kemiallisesta toksisuudesta orgaanista ainesta sisältävissä pohjoisissa vesistöissä. Uraanin myrkyllisyydessä oli havaittavissa eroa joidenkin koevesien välillä. Järvivesien DOC-pitoisuus vaihteli välillä 3.98-17.75 mg/l. Levälajien välillä havaittiin huomattava, noin 10-kertainen, ero herkkyydessä uraanille. Mitatut IC50 -arvot Desmodesmus subspicatukselle olivat 2.01-5.50 mg/l U ja Raphidocelis subcapitatalle 0.11-0.80 mg/l U. Vastaavat trooppiselle levälajille määritetyt arvot kirjallisuudessa olivat samassa kokoluokassa Raphidocelis subcapitatalle, mutta Desmodesmus subspicatukselle mitatut arvot olivat selvästi korkeampia. The bedrock in Finland contains uranium (U), which is mobilized by weathering and enters water systems. In addition to natural sources, uranium may also be released to natural water bodies, rivers and lakes as a consequence of mining, enrichment and processing of metal ores and other anthropogenic activities. Uranium has both chemical and radiological toxicity. The number of investigations regarding the chemical toxicity of U in natural waters, in general, and particularly in Finland is limited. The bioavailability of U is influenced by environmental conditions; it is therefore important to assess U toxicity in local conditions. Such knowledge is needed for the environmental impact assessments of Finnish mining sites. Chemical toxicity of uranium was measured in natural freshwaters from Finnish lakes, representing a gradient of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and in artificial freshwater. Two species of algae, Desmodesmus subspicatus and Raphidocelis subcapitata, were chosen for the tests for the sake of cross comparison. The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of chemical toxicity of uranium in boreal natural waters rich in natural organic matter. A difference in U toxicity between some of the test waters was detected. The DOC range in the lakes was 3.98-17.75 mg/l. There was a significant, roughly 10-fold, difference in sensitivity towards U toxicity between the two species studied. Toxicity values (IC50) for Desmodesmus subspicatus were between 2.01 and 5.50 mg/l U and for Raphidocelis subcapitata between 0.11 and 0.80 mg/l U. Toxicity values given in the literature for a species of tropical alga were within the range found here for Raphidocelis subcapitata while those for Desmodesmus subspicatus were significantly higher.
