Uraani voi olla vesist\u00f6iss\u00e4 kemiallisesti ja radiologisesti haitallinen. Tutkimustietoa uraanin myrkyllisyydest\u00e4 suomalaisissa luonnonvesiss\u00e4 on yleisesti rajoitetusti saatavilla. Uraanin biosaatavuuteen vaikuttavat vallitsevat vesist\u00f6n olosuhteet, esimerkiksi liuenneen orgaanisen hiilen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4, mink\u00e4 seurauksena uraanin myrkyllisyytt\u00e4 on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 arvioida paikallisissa olosuhteissa. Tietoa tarvitaan esimerkiksi kaivosteollisuuden ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6vaikutusten arvioimiseen\r\nUraanin kemiallista myrkyllisyytt\u00e4 tutkittiin sek\u00e4 suomalaisissa j\u00e4rvivesiss\u00e4 ett\u00e4 synteettisess\u00e4 makeassa vedess\u00e4, vaihtelevissa liuenneen orgaanisen hiilen (DOC) pitoisuuksissa. Kokeissa k\u00e4ytettiin kahta lev\u00e4lajia, Desmodesmus subspicatus ja Raphidocelis subcapitata, lajien v\u00e4lisen herkkyyden vertailemiseksi. T\u00e4m\u00e4n ty\u00f6n tarkoituksena on lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 uraanin kemiallisesta toksisuudesta orgaanista ainesta sis\u00e4lt\u00e4viss\u00e4 pohjoisissa vesist\u00f6iss\u00e4.\r\nUraanin myrkyllisyydess\u00e4 oli havaittavissa eroa joidenkin koevesien v\u00e4lill\u00e4. J\u00e4rvivesien DOC-pitoisuus vaihteli v\u00e4lill\u00e4 3.98-17.75 mg/l. Lev\u00e4lajien v\u00e4lill\u00e4 havaittiin huomattava, noin 10-kertainen, ero herkkyydess\u00e4 uraanille. Mitatut IC50 -arvot Desmodesmus subspicatukselle olivat 2.01-5.50 mg/l U ja Raphidocelis subcapitatalle 0.11-0.80 mg/l U. In addition to natural sources, uranium may also be released to natural water bodies, rivers and lakes as a consequence of mining, enrichment and processing of metal ores and other anthropogenic activities. Uranium has both chemical and radiological toxicity. The number of investigations regarding the chemical toxicity of U in natural waters, in general, and particularly in Finland is limited. The bioavailability of U is influenced by environmental conditions; it is therefore important to assess U toxicity in local conditions. Such knowledge is needed for the environmental impact assessments of Finnish mining sites.\r\nChemical toxicity of uranium was measured in natural freshwaters from Finnish lakes, representing a gradient of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and in artificial freshwater. Two species of algae, Desmodesmus subspicatus and Raphidocelis subcapitata, were chosen for the tests for the sake of cross comparison. The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of chemical toxicity of uranium in boreal natural waters rich in natural organic matter.\r\nA difference in U toxicity between some of the test waters was detected. The DOC range in the lakes was 3.98-17.75 mg/l. There was a significant, roughly 10-fold, difference in sensitivity towards U toxicity between the two species studied. Toxicity values (IC50) for Desmodesmus subspicatus were between 2.01 and 5.50 mg/l U and for Raphidocelis subcapitata between 0.11 and 0.80 mg/l U.
