Keskeisen\u00e4 motiivina ovat sek\u00e4 neuroverkkoihin tutustuminen ett\u00e4 lintujen automaattisen tunnistamisen mahdollisuudet luonnon monimuotoisuuden suojelun, lintuharrastajien ja opetuksen n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Linnut reagoivat ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n muutoksiin suhteellisen nopeasti, mink\u00e4 takia niit\u00e4 tarkkailemalla voidaan saada t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa luonnonsuojelun n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Lintujen tarkkailu on my\u00f6s suosittu harrastus, joten my\u00f6s harrastajat voisivat hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 neuroverkkoavusteisesta lintujen tunnistamisesta. Lis\u00e4ksi Opetushallituksen tavoitteisiin kuuluu, ett\u00e4 peruskoulussa opittaisiin muun muassa lajintuntemusta sek\u00e4 tuntemaan kasvien ja el\u00e4inten el\u00e4m\u00e4nvaiheita. Neuroverkkoja voisi olla mahdollista hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6s opetuksessa. Tutkielmassa luodaan ensin yleinen kuva neuroverkoista, mink\u00e4 j\u00e4lkeen k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n neuroverkkojen hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4mist\u00e4 lintujen tunnistamisessa \u00e4\u00e4nen perusteella. Tutkielmassa k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s konvoluutioneuroverkkoja, sill\u00e4 ne ovat olleet viime aikoina keskeisess\u00e4 asemassa niin \u00e4\u00e4nen- kuin kuvantunnistuksessakin ja niit\u00e4 sovelletaan my\u00f6s lintujen tunnistamiseen. Tutkielma toteutetaan kirjallisuuskatsauksena, ja l\u00e4htein\u00e4 k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa neuroverkkojen teoriataustaan liittyvi\u00e4 artikkeleita sek\u00e4 l\u00e4hteit\u00e4, joissa neuroverkkoja on hy\u00f6dynnetty automaattisen lintujen \u00e4\u00e4nten tunnistamisen kilpailuissa. The main motives are both to learn about neural networks and the potential of automatic bird recognition in nature conservation. Birds react rapidly to changes in the environment and observing birds using neural networks could produce useful information for nature conservation. Birdwatching is popular as a hobby and also birdwatchers could benefit from automatic recognition of bird species. In addition, the Finnish National Agency for Education aims to teach children to identify species and to learn about plants and animals in general. Neural networks could be utilized also in teaching. First, neural networks are presented in general, after which the utilization of neural networks in bird recognition is examined. The thesis also covers convolutional neural networks since they have played a key role in image recognition as well as sound recognition and they are also applied in bird recognition. The thesis is conducted as a literature review and the source material is mainly formed of articles about the theoretical background of neural networks, and reports in which neural networks are utilized in competitions of automatic bird recognition by sound.
