Ihmisten aiheuttamat h\u00e4iri\u00f6t, kuten purojen patoaminen ja valuma-alueen ojittaminen uhkaavat puroja ja niiden eli\u00f6st\u00f6\u00e4. Huoli pienvesien kunnosta yhdess\u00e4 vesipuitedirektiivin tuoman lakivelvoitteen kanssa on lis\u00e4nnyt purojen kunnostusta ymp\u00e4ri Eurooppaa. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro-gradu ty\u00f6n tavoitteena oli arvioida Iijoen valuma-alueella toteutettujen purokunnostustoimenpiteiden onnistumista ja k\u00e4ytetyn inventointimenetelm\u00e4n soveltuvuutta. Tutkimusasetelma sis\u00e4lsi kunnostettuja, ei-kunnostettuja ja luonnontilaisia puroja, jokaista 5 toistoa. Ty\u00f6h\u00f6n valitut purot oli kunnostettu samanlaisilla menetelmill\u00e4 ja p\u00e4\u00e4asiallinen toimenpide oli puun lis\u00e4\u00e4minen uomaan. Muita toimenpiteit\u00e4 olivat mets\u00e4ojien tukkiminen, vanhojen uomien aukaisu ja kivien palauttaminen takaisin purouomaan. Purot oli inventoitu ennen kunnostusta ja t\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 vuonna 2017 tehty uudelleeninventointi tapahtui 7\u201214 vuotta kunnostustoimenpiteiden j\u00e4lkeen, k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en yhdenmukaista menetelm\u00e4\u00e4. Ty\u00f6n hypoteesit olivat, ett\u00e4 kunnostus on i) lis\u00e4nnyt puun m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 puroissa, ii) kohentanut purojen luonnontilaisuutta, iii) v\u00e4hent\u00e4nyt hiekan m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4, iv) lis\u00e4nnyt syv\u00e4nteiden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4, sek\u00e4 v) lis\u00e4nnyt purojen mutkittelevuutta. Lis\u00e4ksi odotuksena oli kalojen kutupaikkojen ja purouoman leveysvaihtelun lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyminen. Tulokset viittasivat siihen, ett\u00e4 kunnostustoimet olivat lis\u00e4nneet puun m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 kunnostetuissa puroissa. Lis\u00e4ksi syv\u00e4nteiden ja puron leveysvaihtelun m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 kasvoi kunnostetuissa puroissa ja v\u00e4heni ei-kunnostetuissa, mutta erot muutoksissa eiv\u00e4t olleet tilastollisesti merkitsevi\u00e4. N\u00e4iden tulosten perusteella kunnostustoimia voidaan kuitenkin pit\u00e4\u00e4 ainakin osittain onnistuneina. Muissa tutkituissa muuttujissa havaittuja muutoksia ei voi lukea kunnostustoimenpiteiden ansioksi, koska samankaltaisia muutoksia havaittiin my\u00f6s ei-kunnostetuissa ja/tai luonnontilaisissa puroissa. Esimerkiksi puron luonnontilaisuusasteessa havaittiin nousu sek\u00e4 kunnostetuissa ett\u00e4 kunnostamattomissa puroissa, mik\u00e4 viittaa siihen, ett\u00e4 my\u00f6s kunnostamattomat purot voivat osittain toipua ihmisten aiheuttamista h\u00e4iri\u00f6ist\u00e4 ajan my\u00f6t\u00e4. K\u00e4ytetty inventointimenetelm\u00e4 osoittautui soveliaaksi purokunnostusten seurantaan. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus tuki kunnostusten seurannan t\u00e4rkeytt\u00e4 ja antaa pohjaa tulevaisuuden kunnostusprojekteille.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "Streams are important for biodiversity. Human disturbances such as damming and ditching of the catchment areas, are threatening the streams and their biota. The concern about the state of small waters together with the legislation of Water Framework Directive has initiated major restoration efforts all over Europe. The aim of this Master thesis was to evaluate the success of restoration measures conducted in streams of the Iijoki drainage area and asses the suitability of the inventory method used. The study design included restored, unrestored and natural streams, each in 5 replicates. The chosen streams were restored with similar measures and the principal restoration measure was adding wood into the stream channel. Other restoration measures were blocking the forestry ditches, reopening old channels and placing stones back to the streams. The streams were inventoried once before and again in 2017, 7\u201214 years after the restoration measures, by using a consistent method. The hypotheses of this thesis were that restoration had i) increased the amount of wood in the stream channels ii) enhanced the level of naturalness of the streams iii) decreased the percentage cover of sand as a bottom substrate iv) created more pools within the channel and v) increased the meandering of the channel. In addition, creation of spawning areas for the fish and increase in the channel width variation were expected. The results suggested that restoration had increased the amount of wood. In addition, the amount of pools and channel width variation increased in the restored streams and decreased in the unrestored streams, but the differences in changes were not statistically significant. Based on these results, the restoration measures were at least partially successful. Changes in the other examined variables cannot be attributed to the restoration measures as equivalent changes were observed also in the reference streams. For example, the increase in the level of naturalness both in restored and unrestored streams indicates that also the unrestored streams can partially recover over time. The inventory method proved to be a suitable tool in monitoring the effects of restoration.
