Vuonna 2005 tunnettu psykolingvistiikan professori, Zolt\u00e1n D\u00f6rnyei, loi teorian, The L2 motivational self system, jonka mukaan omien tulevaisuudensuunnitelmien konkretisointi vahvistaa motivaatiota. Siisp\u00e4, jos oppilas on tietoinen siit\u00e4, mihin h\u00e4n tulee englantia tulevaisuudessa k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, h\u00e4nen halunsa oppia kyseist\u00e4 kielt\u00e4 kasvaa. D\u00f6rnyei\u2019n teoria perustuu mahdollisten omakuvien (possible selves) ja integroivan motivaation (integrative motivation) teorioille, ja se yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 halun integroitua johonkin tiettyyn yhteis\u00f6\u00f6n ja kuvauksen omasta tulevaisuuden min\u00e4kuvasta.\n\nD\u00f6rnyei\u2019n teoria on hyvin hy\u00f6dyllinen tutkittaessa oppilaiden kieltenopiskelun motivaatiota, ja sit\u00e4 onkin hy\u00f6dynnetty monessa tutkimuksessa. Yl\u00e4asteik\u00e4isten opiskelumotivaation tutkimus on kuitenkin j\u00e4\u00e4nyt v\u00e4h\u00e4isemm\u00e4ksi. Jos opettajat olisivat tietoisempia oppilaiden mielenkiinnonkohteista, opetusta voitaisiin kohdistaa paremmin vastaamaan oppilaiden tarpeita.\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 kyseist\u00e4 ajatusta, ja tutkii yl\u00e4asteik\u00e4isten oppilaiden motivaatiota englannin kielen opiskelua kohtaan. Tutkimus toteutettiin essee muotoisena kirjoituksena er\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 varsinaissuomalaisella yl\u00e4asteella, ja haastatteluun osallistui 17 seitsem\u00e4sluokkalaista. Haastattelussa oppilaita pyydettiin kuvittelemaan itsens\u00e4 viiden vuoden kuluttua ja miettim\u00e4\u00e4n, miten englanti hy\u00f6dytt\u00e4\u00e4 heit\u00e4 koulussa ja vapaa-ajalla.\n\nHaastatteluun vastanneista suurin osa tiesi tavoiteammattinsa sek\u00e4 sen, mihin kouluun aikovat yl\u00e4asteen j\u00e4lkeen jatkaa. Oppilailla oli my\u00f6s n\u00e4kemys siit\u00e4, miten englanti voi heit\u00e4 hy\u00f6dytt\u00e4\u00e4 sek\u00e4 koulussa ett\u00e4 ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4. Suurimpana teemana esille nousi sosiaalisuus. Sosiaalinen media sek\u00e4 englanninkielisten keskustelujen k\u00e4yminen niin suomalaisten kuin ulkomaalaistenkin kavereiden kanssa tuli moneen kertaan esille.
