Kehityksen pääsuuntana on fotorealismi, eli oikeaa maailmaa vastaavat peligrafiikat, joka lähenee samalla kun grafiikkalaitteisto kehittyy. Vaikka peligrafiikka kehittyy koko ajan paremmaksi, jotkut pelinkehittäjät valitsevat silti peliensä grafiikoiksi esimerkiksi 8-bittiset retro-grafiikat tai tyylitellyt ja yksinkertaiset polygoni-grafiikat uusimpien fotorealistisien grafiikoiden sijaan. Tässä kandidaatintutkielmassa selvennetään peligrafiikan historiaa ja kehittymistä sekä pohditaan tulevaisuuden suuntaa. Video game graphics are developing continuously. From the first graphics made with couple of pixels and text adventures, to the 70’s and 80’s 2 dimensional pixel graphics, to deep into 3 dimensional, almost photorealistic worlds, and there is still no end in sight. The main direction of development is photorealism, graphics that look exactly like their real world counterparts. Even though game graphics are developing to even better, some game developers still choose to use 8-bit graphics or low poly graphics instead of the newest photorealistic graphics. This bachelor’s thesis will give insight about history and development of game graphics and some speculation about the future.
