Pitk\u00e4aikaisella ja yht\u00e4jaksoisella istumisella on lukuisten tutkimusten avulla l\u00f6ydetty yhteyksi\u00e4 terveyden kannalta ep\u00e4edullisten ilmi\u00f6iden parista. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, kuinka yl\u00e4asteik\u00e4isten ruutuaika ja sen eri osa-alueet muuttuivat 7. luokalta 9. luokalle. Mukana oli my\u00f6s liikuntaluokkalaisia, joiden ruutuaikaa vertasimme yleisopetuksen muiden luokkien oppilaiden ruutuaikaan. Lis\u00e4ksi tarkastelimme fyysisen aktiivisuuden, painoindeksin ja vanhempien koulutustason yhteytt\u00e4 ruutuaikaan.\n\nTutkielman aineistona k\u00e4ytettiin Liikkuva koulu -ohjelmaan liittyv\u00e4\u00e4n LIKES- tutkimuskeskuksen tutkimukseen kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2013 ja 2015 ker\u00e4ttyj\u00e4 aineistoja. Tutkittavat olivat kahden l\u00e4nsisuomalaisen koulun 7. ja 9. luokkalaisia poikia ja tytt\u00f6j\u00e4 (n= 417). Aineisto analysoitiin IBM SPSS Statistics 22 -ohjelmalla k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 kahden riippuvan otoksen t-testi\u00e4, Pearsonin korrelaatiokerrointa, toistettujen mittausten varianssianalyysia ja kahden riippumattoman otoksen t-testi\u00e4.\n\nTutkimus osoitti, ett\u00e4 suomalaisten yl\u00e4asteik\u00e4isten kokonaisruutuaika ei ollut muuttunut yl\u00e4asteen aikana. Eri ruutujen katsomisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4t olivat muuttuneet molemmilla sukupuolilla yl\u00e4asteen aikana. Liikuntaluokkalaiset viettiv\u00e4t yht\u00e4 paljon aikaa ruudun \u00e4\u00e4ress\u00e4 kuin yleisopetuksen muut oppilaat. Pojat viettiv\u00e4t ruudun \u00e4\u00e4ress\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n aikaa kuin tyt\u00f6t. P\u00e4ivitt\u00e4inen ruutuaika ylitti ruutuaikasuositukset selke\u00e4sti molemmilla sukupuolilla. Viikonloppuisin nuoret viettiv\u00e4t ruudun \u00e4\u00e4ress\u00e4 aikaansa noin puolitoista tuntia enemm\u00e4n koulup\u00e4iviin verrattuna.\n\nRuutuajan sis\u00e4lt\u00f6 oli muuttunut molemmilla sukupuolilla. Sek\u00e4 poikien ett\u00e4 tytt\u00f6jen osalta kotiteht\u00e4vien tekeminen tietokoneen tai muiden elektronisten v\u00e4lineiden avulla ja yhteydenpito muiden kanssa sosiaalisen median avulla olivat kasvattaneet osuuttaan yl\u00e4asteen aikana. TV:n, videoiden tai DVD-elokuvien katseleminen, tietokone- tai konsolipelien pelaaminen ja tavallisten tai elektronisten kirjojen, aikakausilehtien, sanomalehtien yms. lukeminen olivat v\u00e4hentyneet. Taustamuuttujilla (fyysinen aktiivisuus, painoindeksi, vanhempien koulutustaso) ei ollut tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4 kokonaisruutuajan m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n muutokseen, mutta yksitt\u00e4isten ruutujen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n muutosta voitiin selitt\u00e4\u00e4 taustamuuttujilla. Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Master\u2019s thesis, 94 p., 4 appendices.\n\nScreen time is a mainly sedentary behavior and can be categorized as an inactive action. Various studies have shown the associations between long-term and continuous sitting and negative health outcomes. The purpose of this master\u2019s thesis was to find out how screen time changed during secondary school; from 7th to 9th grade. Our study compared the screen time of students from sports classes to that of other mainstream education students. We also examined the effects of different variables concerning screen time. These variables were physical activity, BMI, and the education background of the parents.\n\nThe research\u2019s data is based on Liikkuva koulu -program\u2019s materials from spring 2013 and 2015. The data used by us was gathered from two upper secondary schools from the western part of Finland. The total amount of participants was 417 students who were 7th graders in the first measurement and 9th graders in the second. The data was analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 22 using two independent unpaired sample t-tests, repeated measure variance analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson\u2019s correlation coefficient to analyze the data.\n\nThe research showed that Finnish secondary school-aged adolescents\u2019 total screen time did not change during upper secondary school. However, the content of screen time changed for both genders. Screen time did not significantly differ between sport class students and other students in mainstream education. Boys had more screen time than girls. Daily screen time exceeded the recommendations for both genders. Students had approximately 90 minutes more screen time on weekends than on schooldays.\n\nThe content of screen time changed over time for both genders. The time used to do homework using a computer or any other electronic device and the time spent on social media increased the most. The time spent watching television, DVDs, playing videogames, or reading normal or electronic books, magazines, or papers decreased between the measurements. The variables (physical activity, BMI, parents\u2019 education background) did not have a statistically significant impact on changes to the total amount of screen time. However, the changes were possible to explain with used background variables when sources of screen time were examined individually.
