Tutkielma perustuu kahdesta eri teknologia-alan muuntokoulutuksesta kirjoitettuun tieteelliseen artikkeliin ja toteutetaan kahden tapauksen vertailevana tapaustutkimuksena na\u0308iden artikkeleiden perusteella. Ennen varsinaista vertailua tutkielmassa perehdyta\u0308a\u0308n aikuisopiskelijoihin ja heida\u0308n opintojensa haasteisiin aihepiiriin liittyva\u0308n kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla. Sen ja\u0308lkeen tutkielmassa esitella\u0308a\u0308n kummankin tieteellisen artikkelin tutkimusmenetelma\u0308t ja usean tapauksen tapaustutkimuksen menetelma\u0308. Tapauksia vertailemalla saadaan selville, etta\u0308 keskeisimpia\u0308 haasteita muuntokoulutuksissa ja muuntokoulutusten opiskelijoilla on tyo\u0308ela\u0308ma\u0308n, perheen ja opintojen yhteensovittamisessa. Ka\u0308vi ilmi, etta\u0308 haasteita on osallistumisessa nuorille opiskelijoille suunnitelluille opintojaksoille seka\u0308 varautumisessa opiskelutapoihin, menetelmiin ja tyo\u0308ma\u0308a\u0308ra\u0308a\u0308n. Opintojen ja tyo\u0308ela\u0308ma\u0308n yhteytta\u0308 pita\u0308isi myo\u0308s painottaa aikuisopiskelijoille toteutettavan koulutuksen suunnittelussa. Edellisten lisa\u0308ksi esiin nousi myo\u0308s tutkintoa ta\u0308ydenta\u0308vien opintojen merkitys aikuisopiskelijoille. The research in this thesis bases on two research articles on two individual continuing education programmes within the field of technology, and it is carried through as a multiple case study in which the two studies are compared with each other. At first, the thesis gives an overview on adult students and the challenges they are known to face through a scientific literature review. Next, an overview of the multiple case study method and the methods in the research articles are presented. By comparing these two study programmes, it becomes clear that adult students face considerable challenges in combining their careers and family lives with the studies in the programmes. The students also faced challenges to adjust to studies that are planned primarily for traditional, young, students. They were not sufficiently prepared for either the methods of studying or to the amount of work the studies required. In a continuing education study programmes, like the ones in this research, the link between working life and study contents should be clear and understandable for students, and it should be taken into a count already in the planning phase of the study programme. Additionally, the role of prerequisite studies emerged in both programmes.
