Tutkimus on toteutettu osana laajempaa NEEDS (Neural Effects of Exercise, Diet and Sleep) tutkimusaineistoa yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston monitieteisen aivotutkimuskeskuksen, psykologian laitoksen, liikuntabiologian tieteenalan sek\u00e4 It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston biol\u00e4\u00e4ketieteen yksik\u00f6n kanssa. Yhteens\u00e4 tutkimukseen osallistui 54 nuorta, joista tytt\u00f6j\u00e4 34 ja poikia 20. Osallistujat olivat i\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4n 16-19 vuotiaita ja heid\u00e4t rekrytoitiin tutkimukseen Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n alueelta. T\u00e4m\u00e4n kandidaatin tutkielman aineisto koostuu niiden yhdeks\u00e4n tutkittavan mittaustuloksista, jotka valikoituivat NEEDS-tutkimuksen jatkomittauksiin ja suorittivat mittaukset loppuun saakka. Tutkimuksessamme keskityimme toiminnanohjauksen komponenteista erityisesti inhibitioon, jonka mittarina k\u00e4ytettiin Stroopin v\u00e4ri-sanatesti\u00e4. Korkean intensiteetin intervalliharjoittelukerta koostui kahdeksasta 30 sekunnin pituisesta korkean intensiteetin intervallista, joista jokaista seurasi 1,5 minuutin pituinen matalaintensiteettinen aerobinen polkemisjakso polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometrilla toteutettuna. Polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometrin korkean intensiteetin intervalliperiodien vastukseksi m\u00e4\u00e4riteltiin 10% tutkittavan rasvattomasta kehon massasta. Samoille tutkittaville suoritettiin sek\u00e4 koe- ett\u00e4 kontrollimittaus, ja tutkittavat suorittivat molemmilla mittauskerroilla kaksi Stroopin v\u00e4ri-sanatestin 480 sanan trialia. Jokaisesta trialista laskettiin erikseen oikeiden kongruenttien vastausten sek\u00e4 oikeiden inkongruenttien vastausten reaktioajat ja n\u00e4ille laskettiin keskiarvot. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkittiin HIIT-harjoittelun vaikutuksia kongruenssiefekteihin muodostamalla nelj\u00e4 erotusmuuttujaa v\u00e4hent\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 saman mittauskerran inkongruenttien vastausten reaktioaikojen keskiarvoista kongruenttien vastausten reaktioaikojen keskiarvot. Toiminnanohjauksen prosessien tarkkuutta tutkittiin tarkastelemalla HIIT-harjoittelun vaikutuksia virheellisten vastausten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tutkittavien virheellisten vastausten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4t v\u00e4heniv\u00e4t yksitt\u00e4isen mittauskerran alku- ja loppumittauksen v\u00e4liss\u00e4 riippumatta siit\u00e4, oliko kyseess\u00e4 koe- vai kontrollimittaus. Sen sijaan HIIT-harjoittelulla ei ollut vaikutusta tutkittavien Stroopin v\u00e4ri-sanatestin reaktioaikoihin eik\u00e4 kongruenssiefekteihin. This study is carried out as a part of the NEEDS (Neural Effects of Exercise, Diet and Sleep) research in co-operation with Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 Centre for Interdisciplinary Brain Research, Department of Psychology, Unit of Biology of Physical Activity and the Institute of Biomedicine of University of Eastern Finland. Altogether, 54 young people participated in the study, of which 34 were girls and 20 were boys. Participants were 16 to 19 years old and recruited from the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 area. The data of this Bachelor\u2019s thesis consists measurement results of nine participants that completed further measurement of the study. In our study from components of executive functions, we focused especially on inhibition which was measured by Stroop\u2019s color-word test. High intensity interval session consisted of eight 30-second high intensity intervals, each of which followed a 1.5 minute low intensity aerobic interval with bicycle ergometer. Bicycle ergometer\u2019s resistance was defined as 10% of participants\u2019 fat-free body mass. The same participants took part in experimental and control measurements and performed two Stroop color-word test trials in both measurements. Reaction times for correct congruent and incongruent responses were calculated separately and averaged. Moreover, the effects of high intensity interval training on participants\u2019 congruence effects were analyzed by generating four new variables by subtracting averaged reaction times of congruent responses from averaged reaction times of incongruent responses. The accuracy of the components of executive functions was analyzed by examining the effect of high intensity interval training on the number of incorrect answers. In this study, the number of incorrect answers of Stroop color-word test were significantly lower at the final trial of a single measurement session compared to the initial trial in both, experimental and control measurements. High intensity interval training had no effect on participants\u2019 reaction times or congruence effects.
