Videopelit ovat saavuttaneet my\u00f6s akateemisen\r\ntutkimusty\u00f6n mielenkiinnon mm. tietokoneavusteisen kielenoppimisen (computer-assisted language learning,\r\nCALL) ja peleihin pohjautuvan oppimisen (game-based learning) muodossa (ks. esim. Peterson, 2013; Reinhardt &\r\nSykes, 2012). N\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimusalat keskittyv\u00e4t kuitenkin videopelien ja erilaisten videopeleille ominaisten piirteiden\r\nsoveltamiseen muodollisissa oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6iss\u00e4, kuten kouluissa ja muissa oppilaitoksissa. Vapaa-ajalla\r\ninformaalien oppimistilanteiden kautta tapahtuvaan kielenoppimiseen kohdistuva tutkimus onkin ollut verrattain\r\nv\u00e4h\u00e4isemp\u00e4\u00e4. Videopeleihin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4n informaaliin oppimiseen keskittyv\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llinen tutkimus (mm. Sundqvist &\r\nSylv\u00e9n, 2012; Uuskoski, 2011) kuitenkin osoittaa, ett\u00e4 vapaa-ajalla tapahtuvan videopelaamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja\r\nenglannin oppimisella on positiivinen yhteys. Kielenoppijoiden omia kokemuksia videopeleist\u00e4 osana\r\nkielenoppimista on kuitenkin tutkittu varsin v\u00e4h\u00e4n.\r\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tarkoitus on tuoda esiin suomalaisten, englantia vieraana kielen\u00e4 puhuvien kielenoppijoiden\r\nkokemuksia vapaa-ajalla, kaupallisten videopelijulkaisujen my\u00f6t\u00e4 tapahtuvasta englanninoppimisesta. Lis\u00e4ksi\r\ntutkimus selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollisuutta sille, ett\u00e4 videopelaaminen lis\u00e4\u00e4 oppijoiden motivaatiota englannin formaalia\r\nopiskelua kohtaan ja selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 osallistujien muita oppimiskokemuksia, kuten yleis- ja historiatiedon oppimista.\r\nTutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin haastattelututkimuksella, joka toteutettiin vuoden 2017 syksyn aikana. Tutkimuksen\r\nosallistujat vaihtelivat lukion ensimm\u00e4isen vuosikurssin opiskelijoista yliopisto-opiskelijoihin ja aktiivisesti\r\nty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 mukana oleviin osallistujiin.\r\nHaastatteluissa nousi esiin erityisesti positiivisia kokemuksia sanaston ja kommunikaatiotaitojen oppimisesta.\r\nSanaston oppimisessa esiin nousivat erityisesti substantiivit ja verbit, joille monet erilaiset pelit tarjoavat\r\nv\u00e4litt\u00f6m\u00e4n ja selke\u00e4n kontekstin, joka auttaa uuden sanan oppimisessa. Erityisesti MMORPG-genren roolipelit\r\nsek\u00e4 pelaajien v\u00e4liseen \u00e4\u00e4nikommunikaatioon tukeutuvat verkkomoninpelit koettiin hy\u00f6dyllisiksi, sill\u00e4 niiden\r\nkautta voi oppia englannin suullisia ja kirjallisia taitoja. Videopelien ja oppimismotivaation yhteyden analyysiss\u00e4\r\nesiin nousi selke\u00e4 eroavaisuus nuorempien ja vanhempien osallistujien v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Nuoremmat osallistujat kokivat\r\nvideopelaamisen motivoivan heit\u00e4 opiskelemaan englantia, kun taas vanhemmat osallistujat suhtautuivat t\u00e4h\u00e4n\r\najatukseen negatiivisemmin. Toisaalta yksi vanhempi osallistuja kertoi videopelien lis\u00e4nneen h\u00e4nen\r\nmielenkiintoaan englannin oppitunteja ja tuntity\u00f6skentely\u00e4 kohtaan.
