Lingua francana toimivalta englannin kielelt\u00e4 on l\u00e4hes mahdoton v\u00e4ltty\u00e4, koska se on osa monen jokap\u00e4iv\u00e4ist\u00e4 el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 esimerkiksi eri medioiden kautta. Suurin osa t\u00e4st\u00e4 oppimisesta tapahtuu alitajuisesti, eik\u00e4 henkil\u00f6 tee tietoista valintaa oppia altistuessaan kielelle tavalla tai toisella.\n\nLukemisen merkitys kielen oppimisessa on laajasti tutkittu aihe (ks. esim. Krashen, 1989; Krashen and Bland, 2014). Yleinen n\u00e4kemys on, ett\u00e4 kohdekielell\u00e4 lukeminen tukee kielen oppimista. Lukeminen ei kuitenkaan tyypillisesti korostu opetussuunnitelmissa muita oppimismenetelmi\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n. Vieraan kielen oppimisessa my\u00f6s kielen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4mist\u00e4 autenttisissa tilanteissa pidet\u00e4\u00e4n t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4. T\u00e4llaisia tilanteita on kuitenkin hankalaa luoda kouluymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4. \n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tavoite oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, kuinka paljon englanninkielisen fanifiktion lukeminen ja kirjoittaminen sek\u00e4 online-faniyhteis\u00f6ihin osallistuminen vaikutti englannin kielen oppimiseen. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin nelj\u00e4\u00e4 englannin p\u00e4\u00e4aineopiskelijaa, jotka olivat olleet aktiivisia fanifiktion harrastajia yl\u00e4koulu- ja lukioi\u00e4ss\u00e4. \n\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 erityisesti fanifiktion lukemisella oli ollut suuri vaikutus englannin kielen oppimiseen haastateltavien omien arvioiden perusteella. Fanifiktio oli tarjonnut luetunymm\u00e4rt\u00e4mist\u00e4 ja uutta sanastoa, ja online-yhteis\u00f6ihin osallistuminen oli puolestaan opettanut informaalimpaa kielt\u00e4 ja keskustelukulttuuria.\n\nTutkimuksen tulokset n\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t, ett\u00e4 erityisesti vapaa-ajalla tapahtuvalla lukemisella oli suuri merkitys kielen oppimisessa. Tulokset korostivat my\u00f6s kielenoppijoille mielekk\u00e4iden aktivititeettien kautta oppimisen.
