Tutkimuksen teht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 oli lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rien johtamisty\u00f6n erityispiirteist\u00e4. Tutkimuskohteena olivat ison keskussairaalan ylil\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rit sek\u00e4 toimialueiden ja vastuualueiden johtajina toimivat l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rit. Tutkimus suoritettiin laadullisena puolistrukturoituna haastattelututkimuksena, jonka analysointi suoritettiin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin\u00e4 teemoitteluperiaatteella. Haastateltavakseni suostui kohderyhm\u00e4st\u00e4 yhteens\u00e4 9 nais- ja miesl\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4ri\u00e4, jotka olivat my\u00f6s erikoisl\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4reit\u00e4. Tutkimustuloksissa l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtaja kuvautui akateemisesti pitk\u00e4lle koulutettuna l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rin\u00e4, jonka ammatti-identiteetti ja ty\u00f6moraali ovat vahvasti l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4riydess\u00e4, johon johtaminenkin pitk\u00e4lti tukeutuu. Potilasty\u00f6ll\u00e4 ja sen osaamisella on l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajien mieless\u00e4 vahva arvostus johtamisty\u00f6n j\u00e4\u00e4dess\u00e4 ajoittain potilasty\u00f6n varjoon. L\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajien kokemuksien mukaan my\u00f6s ty\u00f6ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 odottaa heilt\u00e4 potilasty\u00f6h\u00f6n osallistumista. Ty\u00f6ajastaan l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajat k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin puolet potilasty\u00f6h\u00f6n ja puolet ei-potilasty\u00f6h\u00f6n, kuten l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajat usein johtamis- ja hallintoty\u00f6t\u00e4 kutsuivat. Ty\u00f6kuvan jakautumisessa n\u00e4iden osa-alueiden kesken tuli esille variaatioita tilap\u00e4isest\u00e4 pysyv\u00e4mpiin ratkaisuihin. Erikoisala, l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajan toimialue ja hierarkia-asema vaikuttavat ty\u00f6kuvan jakautumiseen. Riippumatta ty\u00f6nkuvan jakautumisesta l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajana toimimiseen n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 edelleen liittyv\u00e4n aiemman kirjallisuuden tapaan moniroolisuus, rooliristiriita sek\u00e4 johtajaroolissa koettu aika- ja arvotuspula. Valtaosa l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rijohtajista viihtyi esimiesasemassa ja halusi johtaa kollegakuntaansa esikuvana.
